SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Friday for help in identifying whoever has been hurling or shooting things at moving cars in Mission Bay Park in recent months, causing extensive property damage along with some injuries.On at least eight nights since November, someone has thrown or shot unidentified objects or projectiles at vehicles traveling in the area of Ingraham Street and West Mission Bay Drive, just west of SeaWorld San Diego, according to police.The targeted cars sustained damages, including dented bodies and broken windshields, totaling between 0 and ,000 each, officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man climbed through a window of a Pacific Beach home Monday morning and attacked a woman in her bedroom before fleeing, police said.Dispatchers received a call around 5:15 a.m. from the victim, who reported that she found a man in her bedroom after he apparently entered through a window of her home on Grand Avenue near Olney Street, San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The woman also reported that the man had attacked her, but she was able to get away and lock herself in her roommate's bedroom before calling police, Hernandez said.Officers arrived and searched the home, but found no one inside. Paramedics treated the victim for minor injuries, including a bloody nose, but she declined transport to a hospital, Hernandez said.No detailed description of the intruder was immediately available. 852

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man accused in a series of San Diego-area gang-related killings and attempted slayings pleaded not guilty Monday to murder, attempted murder and conspiracy charges.Ismael Betancourt, 20, is charged in the Aug. 1, 2019, shooting death of 57-year-old Marco Magana in Mountain View, the Feb. 8 shooting death of 19-year-old Leah Posey in Southcrest, and two attempted murders that allegedly occurred on July 24, 2019 and Feb. 8.San Diego police announced Betancourt's arrest last month in connection with the April 8, 2018, shooting death of 55-year-old Lowry Rivers in National City, which occurred when Betancourt was 17. Rivers' killing is not listed in the latest complaint, and it's unclear whether Betancourt is being tried in juvenile court regarding that crime or whether additional charges are pending in his current case.In addition to the murders and attempted murders, Betancourt is charged along with six co-defendants with conspiracy to commit a crime, for what prosecutors allege was a plan to kill rival gang members.The overarching conspiracy includes the July 12, 2019, shooting death of 20-year-old Joaquin Ruiz, who was shot in a vehicle in Bay Terraces by assailants who opened fire from another vehicle.The four defendants charged with that slaying have been arrested and pleaded not guilty. Two of those defendants, Ethan Apan, 28, and Kevin Herrera, 26, are also charged in the murders in which Betancourt is charged. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego epidemiologist was named today to Time magazine's 2018 list of the 50 most influential people in health care.Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences at UCSD's School of Medicine, was recognized for her successful efforts last year to keep her husband, psychiatry professor Tom Patterson, from dying due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection the World Health Organization classifies as the world's deadliest.Strathdee urged the team of scientists and doctors to use an experimental treatment for the infection using bacteriophages -- small viruses that act as parasites to bacteria by infecting and neutralizing them."It's a great honor to be recognized for my efforts to bring phage therapy into the 21st century in North America, but it all started with my single-minded desire to save my husband's life, and it truly reflects a team effort," Strathdee said.The magazine's list honors people who "have changed the state of healthcare in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next."Patterson was the first American patient with a systemic infection to receive bacteriophage treatment, according to Robert "Chip" Schooley, the lead doctor on Patterson's treatment team.
