No masks at first, and now masks all the time. There are new protocols for their team members and for their clients.“If you’re sick please, let us know even if it’s not COVID,” said Wiersma. “Let us know if you’re sick, so we can reschedule you just to be overly cautious.”They're asking employees to self-monitor, pay attention to everything they might feel, COVID-19 or not. They suggest clients either leave or remain in one part of the home. They bring their own equipment and clean the cleaning supplies when they're done.“As the team leaves the home, they take off the mask, they disinfect the kit before they put it in their vehicle to go to the next home, so they’re not taking contaminants into their vehicle and taking it to another customer,” said Wiersma.There are training videos, daily checklists, and they've even held meetings about how to take your gloves off.“It’s little things but in the same respect, it’s important things,” said Wiersma. “You take all these steps to be careful and precautious and at the very last step, if you don’t take your gloves off right you, might as well not have done the rest of them as far as keeping the team safe.”Angel Gatewood, 24, has been cleaning for Merry Maids for the past year. The hardest part for her, someone who loves customers and customer service, has been keeping her client relationships at a distance.“I still try to maintain that personal relationship with my customers which I think is important because I’m in their house every other week touching their things,” said Gatewood. “Your home is your personal bubble. When somebody enters it, you have to have that trust and I like to maintain that."She loves to connect with people and loves her detail-oriented job, but she has asthma and now has to be even more cautious than ever.“I personally take those extra steps,” she said. “I take my inhaler in every time. I wear two pairs of gloves. I also have eczema. It’s a double problem. I wear two pairs of gloves and the mask every time.”Wiersma says while COVID-19 has been challenging, it's about to get busier than ever as people realize health starts in the home."Merry Maids has been around for 40 years and Service Master for 90 years of cleaning and disinfecting, we'll stay who we are and that has helped us sustain through the crisis, but come out of it on a stronger footing." 3118

Families in 17 states will receive nearly 15,000 devices and 7,500 Lego Education Solutions as part of a new partnership aimed at supporting 45 school districts that serve students who are in critical need and who were hit hard by the pandemic.“We often get kids who are under educated and under served from our community, 90% on free and reduced lunch,” Rose Norman, chief operations and grant officer of Southwest Schools in Houston.It's a district that struggles to meet the needs of their students. COVID-19 hit them hard and the abrupt switch to e-learning was problematic for many reasons.“We found out that our high school students were turning in assignments but when we looked closely, we realized they were doing those assignments off of a cellphone,” Norman said.One day, Norman was reading a newsletter, and saw a way for schools to apply for a new initiative that would help with connectivity, devices and educational materials. Norman says, she wrote from her heart, describing what life was like for her students. Less than 10% had a device at home. Some parents lost their jobs and needed help with rent and food, and the district didn't have enough computers for virtual instruction.“What we’ve learned from the COVID was that for a student to have a laptop is a must, not a privilege. It’s a must. But because our kids are not privileged, we have to make that must come to fruition,” Norman said.Southwest Schools was among more than 40 other school districts selected for a program aimed at providing technology for low-income students. Working off a survey from First Book stating that 40% of children in need in the U.S. do not have reliable internet access and another 40% are without access to devices, Intel and CDW-G, a tech solutions provider, joined forces with First Book to give students a fighting change as they head into the fall. (KGTV) — New undercover video appears to show signature gatherers pitching falsehoods to voters get them to sign petitions that would force the massive Newland Sierra development to a public vote.The County Board of Supervisors approved the project last month. It calls for more than 2,000 new homes on nearly 2,000 acres north of Deer Springs Road in Escondido. Opponents, backed by the exclusive Golden Door Spa, launched a signature drive to collect about 68,000 signatures from registered voters before Oct. 26. It would delay the project so the public can weigh in at the polls. On Friday, Newland released undercover video purportedly showing the signature gatherers making claims that the development would raise taxes, force people out of their homes, and encompass 430,000 acres. "What they're doing is basically putting in a bunch of homes, stores, casinos, hotels," one petitioner says in the video (the plan does not call for casinos or hotels).Steve Inscoe, who lives in Escondido, said signature gatherers told him that plans called for one million square feet of commercial space (it calls for 81,000), and that there was no plan to mitigate traffic (Newland Sierra says it will spend million on traffic improvements)."We are at a time when we need a whole lot of housing," said Inscoe, who supports the project.But the committee behind the petition says the real story is what's not in the video. Newland Sierra has deployed so-called truth teams that are allegedly the aggressors - an attorney for the committee says they even surround signature gatherers to block them from doing their jobs. It has led to confrontations, plus restraining orders and cease and desist letters from Vons/Albertsons. Rita Brandin, a vice president at Newland Sierra, said the signature gatherers are the ones who get confrontational."When a signature gatherer who is being paid says 'this project will raise taxes,' our truth teams can say 'that's inaccurate.' So because the signature gatherer is the one that signature by signature is making his paycheck, they get aggressive," she said.Newland Sierra sent the committee a cease and desist letter, reserving its right to litigate.In a response, Sean Welch, the attorney for the committee, warned Newland Sierra against any legal action.
