ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido have made an arrest in connection with a cold case homicide that happened in 1986.Police said at a news conference that Nathan Eugene Mathis, 62, was arrested for the 1986 murder of 75-year-old Richard Finney.According to police, Finney was stabbed more than 30 times at his apartment on November 13, 1986.The case was reopened in 2007 by a retired detective and FBI agent. After reopening the case, authorities say they were able to come up with a blood profile."We made a promise to that family several years ago that we'd do everything we could to solve the brutal slaying of their 75-year-old grandfather," said Chuck Gaylor, a cold case investigator. During the news conference, police said blood and a fingerprint found at the scene matched Mathis.Mathis was arrested after police obtained a search warrant.Finney's family says they are glad justice is finally being served. "Never thought the day would come. It's been 32 years so finally to have this happen is just fabulous! ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Zoo is now five years into its ambitious attempt to save a critically endangered species, the Northern White Rhino, from extinction. There are currently just two Northern White's still alive, both females who are unable to give birth. They live at a preserve in Kenya.“It’s the only thing that keeps me going, thinking that this is possible and that we can save a species," says Dr. Marisa Korody, part of the team working on the project. The concept sounds like a science fiction novel. The plan is to take skin cells from Northern White rhinos preserved at the Safari Park's Frozen Zoo. Using Nobel Prize-winning technology developed 14 years ago, Dr. Korody is working to use those skin cells to make stem cells. Stem cells can then be converted into any other kind of cell. In this case, the genetically pure Northern White Rhino sperm and eggs that could be used for in vitro fertilization, with Southern White Rhinos, a close genetic cousin of the Northern White, to use as surrogate mothers. Dr. Korody says her team has made great progress, including successfully turning skin cells from Angilifu, a male Northern White rhino who died at the Safari Park in 2014, into stem cells and turning those stem cells into heart cells. They even recorded incredible video of those living heart cells beating in a petri dish. “We basically jumped up and down in the lab. That was probably one of the most exciting days we’ve had. We were pulling people in from the hallways to say, come look and see what we did.” Along with the cell portion of the project, tremendous progress has also been made with the in vitro research. This fall, the Zoo celebrated the first birthdays of two Southern White Rhinos who were born using the technology the team hopes to use with the Northern White embryos. “These two, Edward and future, are so healthy, so happy, so well-adjusted. I don’t have children of my own, but I think it must be the same kind, on some scale, of pride you feel in your own children," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, who leads that portion of the project. Federal Judge Robert Lasnik issued a temporary restraining order on Tuesday "blocking federal government from allowing distribution of downloadable 3D printed" guns, according to a tweet from the Washington State Office of the Attorney General."The judge's rule is clear," Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a news conference. "We go back to the status quo, before the federal government made the disastrous decision to undo these protections for public safety."At least 10 US states were scrambling to block access to plans that would allow people to print 3D guns on Tuesday.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a series of actions Tuesday to prevent the distribution of the 3D gun designs. Cuomo issued a cease-and-desist letter to Defense Distributed, a Texas gun-rights organization that posts the plans online, to block the distribution of designs for 3D guns in New York. The governor called the impending release "reckless."Cuomo also directed state police to issue a notice reminding New Yorkers that manufacturing firearms defined as assault weapons is illegal in New York."As the nation rises up and calls for action against gun violence, it is absurd and frightening that the federal government wants to make accessing an automatic weapon as easy as hitting print," he said. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies were investigating a deadly shooting in Fallbrook on Saturday.SDSO homicide detectives were called to the 700 block of Convertible Lane just after 12 p.m. for reports of gunshots by neighbors.Deputies arrived to find an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.
