SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video caught on team of thieves targeting a home in Point Loma. The home sits on a street just off Catalina boulevard. Last Thursday, just before 8 p.m., an SUV is seen driving up and then driving away. 12 minutes later, it's back. This time, it parks. As the camera switches to night vision, three figures emerge. On the side of the home, they are seen hunting for a way in. The dual-pane sliding door in the kitchen is later found shattered. The next time they are seen, the three burglars wearing hoodies are scrambling out of the home, two of them carrying safes. Once they reach the SUV, they toss the safes into the back and take off. Inside the safes: a partial coin collection and dozens of pieces of jewelry, many of them family heirlooms. "I'm angry amd there is a feeling of being empty," said David, who asked 10news not to identify him. One of the stolen pieces is an opal-and-diamond necklace belonging to David's 90-year-old mother, who is living with dementia. She helped design the piece to celebrate her journey from file clerk to business owner at the same business. "Something missing you can't replace ... My mother became a success in a man's world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The newest cheetah cub at the San Diego Zoo has begun a training program to become one of the zoo's animal ambassadors.10News was taken inside the cheetah habitat Wednesday for a behind-the-scenes look at the process, focusing on a five-month-old cub, Roketi."She actually came from a litter of six at a zoo in Texas," said Nicki Boyd, the zoo's Behavior Husbandry Manager. "Unfortunately, she was the runt and not thriving. She had five brothers who were stealing all the milk."Because Roketi could have died by staying with her mother and siblings, she was removed and reared by humans, then sent to the San Diego Zoo.Because of her comfort level with people, Roketi was chosen to train as an animal ambassador. That means she'll be part of the "Animals in Action" program, which gives visitors a closer view and more interactive experience with zoo animals.Many visitors are surprised to see dogs in the habitat with cheetahs, but experts say the dogs help young cheetahs adjust, play, and learn how to interact with humans.The training can take months. "We don't just throw them in together," explained Charmaine Davis, who heads the program. "It's a process. It's all this passive training, day by day."Davis says they use dogs of several different breeds. More important is to find dogs which are the appropriate size to play with a cheetah, not too big or too small.Davis says the zoo is proud to use rescue dogs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man accused of driving into a bicyclist and taking off will have to face a jury. The Oct. 2 crash on State route 67 in Ramona left the victim, Michelle Scott, on life support. Police say the man behind the wheel was Chase Richards, who allegedly kept driving for two miles with the bike lodged in his car. Prosecutors say he dismantled and disguised parts of his car to conceal the evidence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The aunt of a Marine who was rescued after an amphibious assault vehicle accident Thursday off the coast of San Clemente Island says he is recovering well.Catrina Tomamichel said her nephew Dallas, 22, drowned before his brothers in arms rescued him."They pulled him out of the water, my understanding is there is someone, I don't know their name but I want to say thank you, they gave him CPR," says Tomamichel.She said he was airlifted to the hospital and he's now recovering at Balboa Naval Medical Center. She said he is able to walk and already asking to go back to work.
