LAKELAND, Fla. — A Polk County judge denied bond Saturday to a Lakeland, Florida city commissioner facing a second-degree murder charge for the deadly shooting of a suspected shoplifter.Commissioner Michael Dunn will remain held without bond at the Polk County Jail, the judge ruled.Dunn was indicted by a grand jury Friday.The commissioner is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Christobal Lopez at Dunn's business, Vets Army & Navy Surplus store in Lakeland, Florida, October 3. Dunn suspected Lopez was trying to leave the store without paying for an item.Surveillance video of the shooting shows Dunn shoot 50-year-old Christobal Lopez, who was pronounced dead on scene.According to statements, Lopez entered the store with his father. As his father was making a purchase, Dunn reportedly witnessed Lopez trying to steal a hatchet. LEXINGTON, Va. — The Virginia Military Institute has removed a prominent statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Around 9:45 a.m. Monday, a crane plucked the statue off its base and slowly hoisted it away at the public military college in Lexington, where allegations of systemic racism roiled the campus this fall. Until several years ago, some cadets were required to salute the Confederate statue. Named for the ancient British site Stonehenge, where the sun lines up among ancient stones on the solstice, the sun lines up with the gap in La Jolla’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier on certain days of the year. The natural phenomenon makes for spectacular photos. This summer, Scrippshenge is set to take place August 7 - 9, according to the Photo Ephemeris app. “You might even get the shot on Aug 10/11 also, probably with a partially set sun,” says Stephen Trainor of Crookneck Apps. “You'll see the sunset line is ever so slightly to the north of the pier center: that's what you need, because sunset is the moment the sun disappears below the horizon, hence in order to frame the setting sun between the legs of the pier, it still needs to be just above the horizon, and therefore true sunset has to be just slightly to the north,” says Trainor.
