WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A hormone derived from visceral fat called adiponectin may play a role as a risk factor for development of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in women, according to a study published on Monday in online issue of the Archives of Neurology.Thomas van Himbergen, from Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and colleagues measured levels of glucose, insulin, and glycated albumin, as well as C reactive protein, lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2, and adiponectin in the plasma of patients at the 19th biennial examination (1985 -- 1988) of the Framingham Heart Study. The 840 patients (541 women, median age of 76 years) were followed-up for an average of 13 years and evaluated for signs of the development of AD and all-cause dementia. During that time, 159 patients developed dementia, including 125 cases of AD. After adjustment for other dementia risk factors (age, low plasma docosahexaenoic acid, weight change) only adiponectin in women was associated with an increased risk of all-cause dementia and AD."It is well established that insulin signaling is dysfunctional in the brains of patients with AD, and since adiponectin enhances insulin sensitivity, one would also expect beneficial actions protecting against cognitive decline," the authors write. "Our data, however, indicate that elevated adiponectin level was associated with an increased risk of dementia and AD in women."
BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Only one in every three passengers secured train tickets on Saturday through a new online booking system or by phone, according to railway statistics released Sunday.A total of 2.112 million train tickets were sold online or by phone on Saturday, making up 36.3 percent of the total sales, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays such as the upcoming Spring Festival. The MOR set up an online ticketing system this year in a bid to ease passengers' frustrations in purchasing tickets. However, website glitches have added to the woes of travelers, especially migrant workers, who make up the biggest group in the Spring Festival travel rush. The rush, dubbed the world's largest seasonal migration, started Sunday and will continue for over 40 days.China's railways are expected to carry 235 million passengers over the next 40 days, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the MOR said last week. The Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Nearly a fifth of all Americans 12 years or older have hearing loss so severe that it may make communication difficult, according to a new study led by Johns Hopkins University researchers and published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The findings, thought to be the first nationally representative estimate of hearing loss, suggest that many more people than previously thought are affected by this condition.Study leader Frank Lin, an assistant professor, and his colleagues used data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (NHANES), a research program that has periodically gathered health data from thousands of Americans since 1971. The researchers analyzed data from all participants age 12 and over whose hearing was tested during NHANES examinations from 2001 to 2008. Unlike previous estimates, NHANES includes men and women of all races and ages, from cities scattered across the country, so it's thought to statistically mimic the population of the Untied States.Using the World Health Organization's definition for hearing loss (not being able to hear sounds of 25 decibels or less in the speech frequencies), the researchers found that overall, about 30 million Americans, or 12.7 percent of the population, had hearing loss in both ears. That number jumps to about 48 million, or 20.3 percent, for people who have hearing loss in at least one ear. These numbers far surpass previous estimates of 21 to 29 million.Hearing loss prevalence nearly doubled with every age decade, with women and blacks being significantly less likely to have hearing loss at any age. Lin and his colleagues aren't sure why these groups appear to be protected. However, he notes that the female hormone estrogen, as well as the melanin pigment in darker skin, could have a protective effect on the inner ear.
