JERUSALEM, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Two researchers at the Hebrew University (HU) of Jerusalem have been honored with a prestigious award for their study of the connection between several inflammatory diseases, cancer and bacteria.Medical faculty members, Dr. Eli Pilarsky and Prof. Sigal Ben- Yehuda, won this year's Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund prize that recognizes significant achievement in the field of medicine.The prize committee noted the impressive contributions of Pilarsky and Ben-Yehuda in understanding complex diseases like cancer and antibiotic-resistant infections, and, in a first, decided to award the two scientists this year.Pilarsky told Xinhua that his research deals with the connection between chronic inflammatory diseases like hepatitis, and the development of cancer cells."The relevance of this discovery is that we were able to establish the link between the molecules secreted with such inflammations and the proliferation of cancer cells," Pilarsky explained, noting that "we discovered that the inflammation favors the cancer cells' growth, and now we are trying to find a way to manipulate these molecules to stop the cancer cells from appearing. BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study suggests that crossing your arms could reduce the intensity of pain, according to media reports.The study was conducted by researchers from University College London (UCL), who reported their finding in the journel Pain.They said that crossing the arms could confuse the brain and conflicting information between the brain's two maps - one for the person's body and the other for external space - leading to a lower sensation of pain.A laser was used to generate a four millisecond pin prick on the hands of eight volunteers, who experienced this twice with their arms at their sides and arms crossed.Then the participants were asked to rate the intensity of pain in two situations and an EEG (electroencephalography) was used to measure their electrical brain responses.The results showed that both the perception of pain and EEG activity was reduced when the arms were crossed."Perhaps when we get hurt, we should not only 'rub it better' but also cross our arms," said Giandomenico Iannetti of UCL's department of physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Web exploit toolkits, or " packaged" attack frameworks that can be traded online, are rapidly growing as the top cybercrime weapon due to ease of use and high success rate, a new report has found."When it comes to conducting online crime, exploit toolkits are the weapon of choice for many cyber criminals," said the "2010 Top Cyber Security Risks Report" published by Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) on Monday.The trend started in 2006 with the release of WebAttacker, considered by many to be the first modern day web exploit toolkit, according to the report.An emerging trend ensued and soon took off, and today the Internet is subjected to hundreds of exploits originating from these toolkits."With the ever-increasing, web-based criminal activity, the number of exploit toolkits has skyrocketed and shows no signs of slowing down," the report stated.Though protecting against attacks originated with web exploit toolkits is becoming increasingly difficult, there are ways to minimize the risk of infection, said the report, noting that one of the most effective defenses is to install patches onto host systems.The report also found that while the number of attacks against known vulnerabilities continues to rise, the number of discovered vulnerabilities has plateaued in 2010."We've discovered that rather than investing resources to uncover new exploits, attackers are focused on current, unpatched vulnerabilities in web applications, social networking sites and Web 2.0 interfaces," Mike Dausin, a manager at HP Digital Vaccine Labs, said in a statement.Data from the report showed that nearly half of all reported vulnerabilities exist in web applications, and third-party plug- ins to content management systems have become the leading cause of web application vulnerabilities.
