SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach woman is appealing for tips after a hit-and-run driver struck the motor scooter she was riding, leaving her with serious injuries.On Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m., yoga teacher Fallon Lev was headed to a yoga studio, riding her motor scooter on Ingraham Street, when she exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard."Just gotten onto the ramp, going a reasonable speed," said Lev.In a one-lane section, she looked to her left and felt a car right next to her."It bumped me, causing the scooter wiggle back and forth. Instantly, I'm like on the floor, and my whole body is tumbleweeding on the cement. I must have gone five or six times," said Lev.She says the driver kept going. Later, at the hospital came the diagnosis and surgery."I broke my pelvis in two different areas and have these two bars sticking out of my hipbone and a bar straight across," said Lev.She also suffered a painful road rash and a broken tooth. Her road to recovery will be a long one. Lev, a yoga teacher whose income was greatly impacted by the pandemic, is trying to stay positive. The actions of the driver make her angry."I'm trying not to affect it my healing. Of course, it's extremely disturbing and disappointing ... There is no way the driver didn’t see me go down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A portion of City Hall in Downtown San Diego was evacuated after crews working in the building possibly disturbed asbestos.According to the city, construction crews working on the lobby possibly disturbed the asbestos around 2 p.m. Thursday. The city said in a memo that a contractor working on the sprinkler system accidentally dislodged a section of the ceiling, causing it to crash to the ground. "Immediate action was taken to isolate and contain the material,'' according to the memo. The substance hasn’t yet been confirmed as asbestos, but hundreds of people were forced to evacuate as a precaution. Crews plan to conduct air testing Thursday night with the expectation of reopening City Hall Friday morning. The City Clerk’s office remains open and is working out of a nearby location until Thursday evening so candidates running for office can meet their 5 p.m. deadline. 909

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that the San Diego Unified School District in 2017 saw significant grade-level gains in reading and math scores.The program, called the National Assessment of Education Progress, or NAEP, shows that San Diego is the only large urban district in the nation to see significant test score increases in fourth-grade reading and math.San Diego Unified also performed significantly higher than public schools in large cities in both fourth and eighth-grade math and reading.The 2017 results mitigate a significant score drop in fourth-grade math in 2015, which the district says is due to the implementation of Common Core.The district said Tuesday that long-term data shows a generally upward trend overall.“San Diego Unified stands out as a hub of academic excellence and innovation, where students learn and thrive thanks to the dedication of our teachers,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “The NAEP results underscore the incredible teaching and learning that’s occurring in San Diego Unified schools every day.” 1064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Navy wife battling cancer is looking forward to a good night's sleep, thanks to the help of United Service Organizations (USO) and Jerome's Furniture.Julie Chadek was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer last year and it has since spread to her spine.“I’ve been home from the hospital for a couple of nights now and have been sleeping on the couch because I was so uncomfortable in our old bed," said Chadek.USO teamed up with Jerome's to get the Chadek's their dream bed."I cried for a while, because you just, you don't see that very often," said Julie. "Knowing that there is still some good is quite amazing."The nearly ,000 bed features an adjustable mattress and therapeutic massage.Julie's doctors have created a new plan of action to target the cancer now in her spine.“There’s still a few more options, we’re not giving up, we’re fighting until there’s no more fight left," said Julie. 930

According to caring.com, San Diego ranks 159th out of 302 cities nationally for best and worst cities for seniors. San Diego ranked high on the list when it comes to quality of life, ranking 94th out of the 302 cities. Some areas where San Diego ranked lower include healthcare,180th out of 302 and affordability, placing 194th out of 302. In California, San Diego ranked fairly low, coming in at 45th among 75 cities. The best cities in The Golden State for seniors are San Francisco, Woodland Hills, Santa Monica and Burlingame. Nationally, San Francisco also took the top spot, followed by Fredericksburg, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Boston Massachusetts. Caring.com rated the cities using data on healthcare, housing options, community engagement, transportation, quality of life and workforce development.
