CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is highlighting local businesses that are adapting to serving customers outdoors because of the pandemic. City officials started posting pictures on the city's Facebook and Instagram pages on Monday. Since Monday, they've highlighted barber shops, art galleries, restaurants and yoga studios. The city is calling them ABC, or Accommodating Business Champions. The plan is to feature a different business every day. Itaglo Pasta Bar was one of the businesses featured. Owner and Chef Alejandro Vicens says he was happy to see his business featured by the city. Like so many businesses, Vicens has moved everything outdoors to be able to continue to operate. The city says it plans to continue highlighting business that are moving outdoors. City staff also tells 10News they've been going around the city taking pictures of those that are doing things properly to serve their customers. On Sundays during the month of August, Chula Vista also approved for a portion of Third Avenue to be closed to traffic, so businesses can expand onto the street. 1111

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — More than 220 teachers are out of jobs in the South Bay and a superintendent has been placed on leave. Jessica Davis has been teaching in the Sweetwater Union High School District for almost five years. She's just one of more than 220 layoffs in the district's effort to balance the budget that's been crippling for years."I really poured my heart and soul into my career," said Davis. "I was more than a little bit shocked that they went that high up on the seniority list," said Davis. "I don't know that she should continue in any capacity," said Davis. Chula Vista, CA (KGTV) - A Chula Vista City Council candidate running for District 4 says she is recovering after testing positive for COVID-19.Andrea Cardenas tells 10News she first started feeling symptoms on March 9th. She had a fever of 102, headaches, nausea and stomach pains. So, she called her doctor then went to seek medical care."When I went to Urgent Care, they asked me a few questions," she said. "They asked me if I had been in contact with someone who had tested positive and at the time I didn't know."She said because she is running for city council, she knew she was around many people on election night, but had no idea if anyone was carrying the coronavirus then."They had me do a chest x-ray where they accessed that I had pneumonia," she explained. "They said we could send you to the emergency room and have you tested but they explained the shortage of tests"She said her doctor explained that they were trying to hold the COVID-19 tests for the more vulnerable populations.Cardenas decided to just go home, self isolate, take the medication for pneumonia and hydrate."We have a social responsibility and a community responsibility to stay home," she said.Soon after, she was made aware that she had in fact been in contact with someone who contracted the coronavirus and she was tested immediately on the 16th.Her positive test results didn't come back until the 26th. "When I did test positive, I got a call from the county where they wanted to know my experience, all the symptoms that I had and where I had been," she said.Cardenas said she was fortunate to let the county officials know she had been home the entire time.She tells 10News has not left her home in 21 days and urges other who feel symptoms to immediately self-isolate and call their doctor."The moment that you feel any symptoms, just act as though you have it because it’s better to be safe than sorry," she said.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who have COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover at home without medical care.The County of San Diego urges people to call their doctor or 211 if they have symptoms. 2160

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Frustration is growing after a second fire broke out at the Teresina Apartments in Chula Vista on Sunday night. Witnesses tell 10News they saw a group of teens playing in the park near the apartments and a few minutes later they noticed the fire. William Maher lives in the apartment complex. He tells 10News he was the one who made the call to the fire department. Maher says the teens were recording the flames and laughing. He says they ran away when he yelled at him. The fire was so close to the apartments that the heat shattered several windows and melted window blinds.Sunday night's fire is the second fire in less than three weeks in that same area. On October 25th, fire crews responded to a fire just feet away. Maher hopes police will find the teens before someone gets hurt. He's also hoping parents look through their teen's phones to see if they can find the videos that were recorded. Anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police.  1050

Chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, area is to blame for a multistate E. coli outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday."At this time, no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified," the CDC said.So far 35 cases of E. coli illness in 11 states have been reported and linked to the outbreak. The earliest symptoms began on March 22. Twenty-two of the ill individuals have been hospitalized. Three of those patients developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.Health officials warned the public to stay away from chopped romaine lettuce. "Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away," the CDC said.Restaurants and stores are advised not to serve or sell chopped romaine lettuce.In addition, the agency recommends asking grocery stores and restaurants to confirm their chopped romaine is not from Yuma.The advice is based on interviews with 28 of the ill individuals in which 93% of them reported consuming romaine lettuce within the week they began feeling sick."Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten. The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads," according to the investigation report which also noted there are no reports involving whole heads or hearts of romaine.The CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration are continuing to work with state and local health officials to further identify the source of the contaminated romaine.The-CNN-Wire 2332
