SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a statement, the City of San Diego says it wasn't given enough time ahead of the July 4 weekend to close beach parking lots.Friday, California Office of Emergency Services sent a letter to city managers in the county asking them to close their beach parking lots ahead of the weekend. The letter was sent to officials in San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," the letter stated. "... To protect the public health of San Diegans and reduce the high potential transmission of this deadly disease in San Diego coastal businesses, we write to request that municipal governments do not open beach parking lots for the July 4th holiday weekend."RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendOceanside announced it would close beach parking lots on Thursday, while Carlsbad said late Friday that it would do the same. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's easier than ever to find a place to rent on a short-term basis, anywhere in the world.But this relatively new business model has touched off a whole new way of doing business for another industry: the sex trade.Law enforcement globally is reporting a rise in pop-up brothels. It's bringing this issue out into the light. It tells the shocking true story of a young woman named Ana who spent nine months as a sex slave in a series of pop-up brothels in Ireland. Ana was snatched off the streets of London in broad daylight.According to statistics, that's rare. But what happened to Ana once she was in the hands of the sex traffickers, was not."Doing Money" producer Mike Dormer spoke to 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt, describing the horror Ana endured.RELATED: New CA Medical Board filing on Del Mar doctor accused of prowling"Within 12 hours she was in Ireland in a brothel," Dormer said.Dormer says Ana, and all those like her, are entrapped physically and mentally."Once they've been moved ... they have no friends, no money, no clothes, no passport, no way to escape," Dormer describes.Much like Ana’s reality overseas, U.S. Department of Justice reports reveal the victims are often kept cold, sedated with drugs, and hungry. If they don't meet their quota, they don't eat. Girls are moved by the pimps from one short-term rental to another to both evade being caught by law enforcement and to keep the girls advertised as new in town.It's happening in San Diego...The global issue of pop-up brothels is alive and well in San Diego. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger, of the San Diego Sex Trafficking Task Force, confirms it's happening locally. Last year alone in San Diego, human trafficking was an 0-million industry."We have it going on in massage parlors, hotels ... and we also have it going on in short-term vacation rentals, apartments, condos, and homes," Matzger said.The task force has busted a pop-up brothel operating out of an upscale condo in Mission Valley. Two people were convicted of pimping and pandering and an adult was rescued. She had been trafficked to San Diego from the east coast through Los Angeles. They had two people inside running the computers and security portion of it," the member said. We are not identifying the task force member. "They had a call center, they would give the johns a code to enter the building."He says it all starts on the internet where the girls are advertised for sex. Matzger says the girls are expected to bring in the bucks."Ten times a day. Ten times a night. They work all night long," Matzger says.And they're isolated and totally under the fist of her traffickers"She's dependent on them for where she sleeps, what she eats, when she eats, and when she sleeps. They were convicted and sentenced to three years.Her testimony helped secure the passing of the first Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act in the U.K in over a hundred years. Experts say we have a long way to go and statistics back that up. Worldwide, almost five million women and girls endured forced sexual exploitation last year.In San Diego, the Sex Trafficking Task Force — a combination of positions from members of the DOJ, the San Diego District Attorney's Office, and San Diego Police Department — has created an aggressive front taking on sex trafficking in a county that attracts it because of tourism.Matzger says, "large gatherings such as Comic-Con, sporting events, and other venues that attract tourists ... also attract those looking to buy sex." 4736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lime is warning riders of a problem with their deckles scooters that can cause “sudden excessive braking during use.”The company issued a safety update on Saturday, saying they had recently discovered a bug in the firmware of their scooters.They determined in some circumstances, the brake on the front wheel would be suddenly and automatically applied often after hitting an obstacle while riding downhill at high speeds.“While this issue has affected less than 0.0045% of all Lime rides, some riders have been injured,” wrote Lime in the safety update.That includes Paul Grasso, who says he was riding a Lime scooter on December 18 on Ingraham Street near Vacation Road in Mission Bay.He said he had just gone down the bridge and was making his way up a sidewalk ramp when the scooter’s wheels tightened up, sending him flying face-first into the pavement.“I spent five days in the hospital,” he said with a “broken nose, fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, fractured eye socket, ten stitches in my forehead and stitches on my nose.”10News reached out to Lime about Grasso’s crash but they said they couldn’t comment on rider specific questions.Lime has launched a fleet-wide firmware update to fix the braking bug. It should reach all of their scooters in the next few days, according to the company’s safety update.Until they have confirmed that all of their scooters have been updated, they have issued a list of precautions for riders:Before starting your Lime trip, walk around the scooter and do a visual inspection of the hardware. Is the vehicle body in good condition? If not, don’t use that vehicle; report it to our customer service team and then select another vehicle.Once you start your Lime trip, give the brake a tight squeeze. If the brake does not engage properly and immediately stop the vehicle, dismount, end the trip and notify Lime customer service.Use extra caution in the next few days while we issue the final firmware update -- especially when riding downhill. Always stay in full control of your scooter and don’t go full speed while riding downhill.Comply with any scooter audible or visual warnings to slow or adjust your speed.Ride defensively: wear a helmet and reflective or bright clothing, respect the right of way and be cautious of other cars, trucks and pedestrians, don’t ever ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and always ride in bike lanes when available.Ride smart: follow the rules of the road, keep both hands on the handle bars, don’t use your mobile device while riding and avoid wearing headphones. 2591
