SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost a dozen gyms retained a lawyer, preparing for a fight to stay open against San Diego County's health orders.Monday Governor Gavin Newsom announced a long list of businesses needed to close down again, due to a spike in coronavirus cases.That list includes:places of worship restaurants wineries movie theatersfamily entertainment centerszoos museums cardroomsfitness centerssalonsmalls.Metroflex Gym in Oceanside has been open since May despite the health orders. Owner Lou Uridel said this renewed push to close puts them in a corner and if they close, they won't reopen."We have only one plan, that's to stay open, we don't have the option to keep closing opening, closing opening." Uridel said they've been denied a dozen times for loans."I feel like it would be a betrayal of my faith and a betrayal of my dreams to give up on that and just close down," he said.Uridel said they're a place many find comfort, "we're continuing to get a lot of new gym members, we have stopped signing up people as of today." Uridel said they had to stop to ensure their members have access to the gym with the limited capacity imposed by the county's health orders.San Diego County announced this week they were putting together strike teams to ensure businesses in the list above shut down."It definitely doesn't scare us," he said.He said the laywer they hired found a loophole where the state health order was filed by the health department, and if they are not violating any health regulations they cannot be closed down.San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said they were just following the state's recommendations and those businesses need to shut down to protect the community and bring down coronavirus case numbers.Uridel said they are doing everything possible to create a healthy gym environment.He said they brought in a biologist to measure their air flow with their bay doors open and about a half dozen industrial fans in place.Uridel said their air flow rated 9.1/10.He said every gym member washes their hands on the way in and out, and wipe down their equipment. He said social distancing is in place and there is more cleaning each hour.He said if the county comes after them, "all we can really do is take it in the chin, whatever they're going to throw at us. If they're going to fine us, we'll fight it in court."When asked if he was worried about his staff or members getting sick, he said "it's always a concern, but it's a concern at any business, even the ones that remain open. If you check around, a lot of cases have come out of Home Depot, and grocery stores and there hasn't been one blink to close any of those down."He says his gym is a place of healing, helping military members fight PTSD and others work through the trauma of the coronavirus.Uridel said one man who lost his wife to suicide and faced other challenges is a regular at his gym. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small portion of San Diego State students will return to campus next week for limited in-person classes.The university says students who are taking in-person classes are required to be tested for COVID-19 at least every 14 days. This includes both students living on-campus and those taking in-person courses.Students and instructors on campus are also required to wear a facial covering at all times (with limited exceptions), maintain physical distancing, and have their temperatures checked daily.There will be two temperature check kiosks on campus and instructors will also have the ability to check a student's temperature using a non-contact infrared thermometer.Since the fall semester started, SDSU has reported 1,134 coronavirus cases among students, including 408 on-campus students and 726 off-campus students. Ten faculty or staff and 13 visitors have also reportedly tested positive.To combat off-campus cases from rising in the surrounding College Area, the school has enforced its COVID-19 student policy on students living off-campus as well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An official with the Encinitas Union School District confirmed Sunday a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.In a release sent to families of the district, Superintendent Andree Grey said "individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary" tested positive. Grey could not provide further details citing privacy restrictions."I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An old airport terminal turned innovation lab hopes to ultimately improve the customer experience at San Diego International Airport (SAN).The second group of innovators has begun the 16-week accelerator program to "field test" and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment.The Innovation Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around."We wanted to provide a location where we could invite innovators in to test their solutions," said Rebecca Bloomfield, spokesperson for SAN. Jon Wisner, Director of Business Development & Partnerships at HOHM Inc., says they've already gotten good feedback on a sleeping pod they hope to bring to airports. "What we are trying to validate is the best usage for the pod - whether it be used for a nap, lactation room, or privacy just in general, meditation, prayer," said Wisner. The pods are currently being tested by airport staff.
