(EA) on Tuesday said it has agreed to buy PopCap Games, a leading provider of casual games for digital platforms, in a deal to accelerate its digital transformation.EA said it will pay about 650 million U.S. dollars in cash and 100 million dollars in shares of EA common stock to acquire privately-held PopCap, the maker of blockbuster games including " Plants vs. Zombies," "Bejeweled" and "Zuma".In addition, PopCap's owners are entitled to receive as much as 550 million dollars in earn-outs if certain earnings targets are met through December 2013, according to EA, which is headquartered in Redwood City in the U.S. state of California.Logos of PopCap Games and Electronic Arts Inc."EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," John Riccitiello, EA's chief executive officer, said in a statement."PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a 1-billion-dollar digital business," he noted.PopCap is one of the largest providers of casual videogames for mobile phones, tablets, PCs and social network sites, with more than 150 million games installed and played worldwide on platforms such as Facebook, RenRen, Google, iPhone, iPad and Android.EA said the purchase of PopCap is expected to close in August this year, subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Google on Monday confirmed that it had signed an agreement to buy Admeld, an on-line advertising optimization firm, in a deal seen as the Internet search giant's latest move to bolster its on-line display ad business.Admeld, launched in 2007 and headquartered in New York City, has developed a service that can help on-line publishers manage their ad space more efficiently and profitably.Admeld now has more than 500 customers worldwide, among them are FOX News, IDG TechNetwork, Discovery and The Weather Channel, according to information posted on its website."By combining Admeld's services, expertise and technology with Google's offerings, we're investing in what we hope will be an improved era of flexible ad management tools for major publishers, " Neal Mohan, Google's vice president of display advertising, said in a blog post announcing the deal."We believe that this investment will be an important step to help on-line publishers, and will further improve and grow the display advertising industry as a whole," Mohan noted.On-line display ads usually appear in forms that consist of images and may be interactive. According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, a U.S. trade association, display-related on- line ad revenue in the United States totaled nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2010.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the two companies. LOS ANGELES, June 20 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Cassini spacecraft has successfully completed its second-closest encounter with Saturn's icy moon Helene, beaming down raw images of the small moon, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said on Monday.At closest approach on June 18 Cassini flew within 4,330 miles (6,968 kilometers) of Helene's surface, the second closest approach to Helene of the entire mission, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.This flyby will enable scientists to finish creating a global map of Helene, so they can better understand the history of impacts to the moon and gully-like features seen on previous flybys, according to JPL.Passing from Helene's night side to the moon's sunlit side, Cassini also captured images of the Saturn-facing side of the moon in sunlight, a region that was only illuminated by sunlight reflected off Saturn the last time Cassini closely encountered with the moon in March 2010.The closest Helene encounter of the mission took place on March 10, 2010, when Cassini flew within 1,131 miles (1,820 kilometers) of the moon.The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. XICHANG, Sichuan, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched a new communication satellite, the Zhongxing-10, from its Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest Sichuan Province on early Tuesday.The satellite, carried by a Long March-3B rocket carrier, blasted off from the center at 0:13 a.m., said a statement from the center.According to statistics from the control center, the satellite successfully separated from its carrier rocket and entered Earth's orbit as scheduled, 26 minutes after being launched.The Zhongxing-10 was designed and manufactured by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.The satellite will provide communication, broadcasting and data transmission services for users in China and the Asia-Pacific region. It will replace the Zhongxing-5B satellite, which was launched in 1998.The launch was the 138th mission for the Long March carrier rocket series.
