SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — La Mesa-Spring Valley School District officials have postponed the district's planned reopening date, citing concerns that San Diego County will soon be placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier. The district's reopening has been moved from Oct. 12 for hybrid learning to the week of Nov. 30, according to the district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Intense heat is sparking fires and sending San Diegans to the coast seeking relief."The temperatures today are pretty extreme," Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said, adding the brush is dry from the heat and lack of rain making Wednesday's forecasted record heat very dangerous.A brush fire sparked in Ramona near Ramona St. and Boundary Ave around 11 a.m.The triple-digit heat causing concern for Fire Chief Jason Lambirth with the U.S. Forest Service, "we really take care of our own people, keep a close eye on them, make sure they're hydrated with water and Gatorade and go from there."Firefighters kept the blaze within a couple of acres, according to Shoots.A huge relief to neighbors, like Leanne Plunkett who has lived in Ramona for 44 years. "Oh I'm relaxed now, but it was pretty hectic for a while!" Plunkett said.She was stepping into the shower when law enforcement knocked on their door to issue evacuation orders. Plunkett said she jumped out, threw on clothes, and started packing jewelry and important documents.She said they had to evacuate twice in the past, including the Cedar Fire.The heat taking its toll on San Diegans across the county. Many, like Oscar Fuentes from El Cajon, headed to the beach."It was starting to get to 110 degrees out there so we decided to hit the beach... It's a lot more tolerable that's for sure it's really nice, I expect it's going to be a lot better when we get in that water."He's not alone according to Sgt. So how do you Make it in San Diego on Tax Day? We found an expert who can help.It's the worst sticker shock imaginable. You're used to a little something back from the government every year in the form of a refund, but suddenly you find yourself with a hefty bill. And the feds don't look kindly on late payments."I always tell people: if you owe money, the first step is don't panic," says Ariel Jurow-Kleiman an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of San Diego. Jurow-Kleiman should know. She's helped people in this situation many times before as a tax attorney and now teaches tax law at USD. Here's the problem."The Federal tax laws were changed in a way that will dramatically affect California residents," explains Professor Kleiman.And that's probably what hit you, too. Many itemized deductions you used to get were either tossed out or capped. "It used to be you could deduct all of your state income taxes," adds Jurow-Kleiman.Now those California income taxes are capped at ,000. And your house, the interest on the mortgage was capped too - double whammy. So, if you owe, here's the first step: do not put off filing. "Absolutely, it is so important to file your taxes on time even if you think you're going to owe," says Professor Kleiman, emphasizing the point. There are penalties for filing late: 5% of your tax liability and up to a maximum of 25%. So, let's say you owe 00 and didn't file for a month, that alone will cost you at least an extra . So, file right away, and pay what you can now."There is interest, it fluctuates, right now it's 6%. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In a school year where parents and teachers have had to adjust over and over again, teachers are sharing their stories of hope and gratitude with ABC 10News.Dawn Harrison teachers her first grade students virtually from her classroom in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She hopes one day, she won’t be alone in her class.“I would much prefer to be face to face with my kids and be able to get the hugs… be able to pat their little back or hold their hands,” Harrison said.She knows that is not a reality right now, but thinks about what she is grateful for. She looks forward to monthly distribution days, where she will see colleagues and students for a brief moment when they pick up materials. She is thankful for parents, as she knows this has been difficult for everyone.“They take into consideration my thoughts and feelings, too,” Harrison said. “The parents that have shared with me, they’ve been very thoughtful of taking everybody’s perspective and situations at home.”Harrison has also found an even greater love for another teacher— her husband.“The way he engages [his students], the experiences he’s able to provide for them, it gives me a new appreciation for him,” she said of her husband Rick Meads, a teacher at Eastlake High School.Meads sang his wife’s praises as well. “I’m telling you, the amount of energy that she has to expend for first graders is a whole lot different than what I have to do,” he said. “I don’t know how she does it, but she’s amazing.”Meads is grateful that he is still able to teach, although it is in a format that is new for many educators.“I’m really thankful that we are able to have this opportunity to do this online. If you think about this ten years ago, it would have never happened,” Meads said. ‘I’m not sure what we would have done.”During the summer, elementary school teacher Kelly Martin told ABC 10News that someone described the current situation as a “corona coaster.”With many still on this “corona coaster,” Martin is thankful for her students. “I’m so appreciative of that hard work because three months of this is getting a little draining on some of them,” she said. “I just look forward to finding ways to keep connecting with the students.”As she looks ahead to a new year, Martin said she hopes to “keep it fresh and keep it new, so that the monotony of online learning doesn't drag us down.” 2402
