SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was an emotional day in a Southern California courtroom for the family of a murdered Army veteran.Nearly 20 people who were close to Julia Jacobson read victim-impact statements during the sentencing hearing for her killer, ex-husband Dalen Ware.Julia’s brother, Tony Jacobson, spoke exclusively with 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner. “It was kind of both a celebration to her as well as an understanding that this isn't just some random person. It really is someone that truly did touch her community, served her country and people really did love her very much. Unfortunately, [Ware] took her away from us all,” says Tony Jacobson of his own impact statement that he read in the courtroom.RELATED: Ex-husband of former Army veteran pleads guiltyWare will serve 15 years to life in prison, after pleading guilty to her murder. It was more than a year ago that the retired Army captain and her dog disappeared over Labor Day weekend.Her SUV was discovered abandoned near her home in University Heights. Ware was later arrested in Phoenix where he was living, and charged with her murder.Her remains were discovered in a shallow grave, in Riverside County. Even though Monday’s sentencing was painful, it still brought back a flood of positive memories for the Jacobson family, as they shared old stories.RELATED: Police searching for Julia Jacobson find remains“One of them that I remember so vividly just came rushing back to me. When she would laugh, she would snort a little bit which was makes it sound so embarrassing for her but it was one of her things that made her so personable,” adds Tony. What's next for the Jacobsons remains unclear.“I don’t know if there's really ever closure in something like this. The fact that Dalen has 15 years to life just tells me that in roughly 14 years we’ll have to revisit this again,” says Tony. 1896
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – James Prince, the owner of a recycling center in Point Loma, went to the Peninsula Community Planning Board Thursday night to try and save his business.Prince Recycling is being evicted from his location on the property of the Stump’s Family Market Place.Prince Recycling has become a controversial business in the past one or two years. It is the only recycling center in the area, but many neighbors have started complaining that it is bringing homeless problems to the area.Dirk Stump, the owner of the grocery store, confirmed he is evicting the recycling center, ending their agreement for the past five years. The area is required to have a recycling center, and Dirk says the state could fine him more than ,000 a year for cutting ties with recycling, but at this point, he is willing to pay, because he says the center is attracting homeless and chasing away customers. He said Mr. Prince is a good person and it was purely a business decision.“I recycle thousands of tons of material, and it’s not just from homeless,” Prince said. “Not only that, they’re people too. What am I supposed to do? You’re homeless you can’t come in?” The planning board did not take any action on the issue. Prince says he’s not making any plans to vacate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a new twist on Black Friday shopping. Customers are flocking to buy ammunition before a new California gun law goes into effect. It’s called the “1 million round month.” Just a few hours after opening its doors, Poway Weapons and Gear Range sold half of their 1.2 million rounds of ammo. “Today is a direct reflection of the law,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. “People are trying to stock up and save up now that way they don’t have to worry about it next year.” The new law starting in July says in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass another background check to buy ammunition. Retailers will then have to log the amount of ammo gun owners purchase in a database. The records will be sent to the Department of Justice. When asked about the store’s large sale, Ron Marcus with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in part: “The bottom line is regardless of how people try to prepare themselves before the law goes into effect, majority of Californians voted on Prop. 63 that put these laws into effect."Store owners say they will order more ammunition for customers to purchase at a reduced price. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many Asian American business owners continue to struggle during the pandemic, but a North County teen is hoping to help by creating a website to support local restaurants."I was hearing a lot of stories about Asians in my community experiencing discrimination during the pandemic," said 17-year-old Kaia Culotta.The teen said coming from a family of small business owners, she wanted to do something to help."I realized that there wasn't an easily accessible, comprehensible list of Asian owned businesses in my community," said Culotta. "So, I saw a need for that."For weeks, Culotta learned how to code through free programs online to build a website. The "Help Asian Owned Businesses" site has an extensive list of restaurants located around the county.Culotta said her project sparked the interest of San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate. He even shared a video promoting the site on social media."It is awesome. It's such a neat thing to be doing out of the goodness of her heart," said Joe Kao, owner of R3fresh Juice Bar.After seeing Cate's video, the small business owner reached out to the teen to thank her for putting the site together.Kao said his business, like many others, had fewer customers during the pandemic. "We definitely saw a drop in business, but we've stayed open," he said.Kao applauds Culotta's work and thanks her for thinking of the county's small Asian business owners. 1430
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It can take close to 30 years for a renter in San Diego to save enough money for the down payment on a home.Experts say there are ways to speed up the process.Jennifer and Allan Uy just bought a home for their family of four but to make that possible, they moved in with Jennifer’s parents to save money. They paid off ,000 in debt and saved ,000 for the down payment.“It’s actually like adjusting in terms of watching television, and they had like the Disney Channel on, and we had to take turns so I could watch the news,” said Jennifer’s father.According to Hot Pads, it takes 28 years for a San Diego renter to save enough to put down 20 percent on a median-priced home. Moving in with parents can cut that down to 12 years.Relying on relatives may not be an option for many San Diegans.Todd Lane, president and CEO of California Coast Credit Union, says you don’t necessarily need to save as much money if you have a higher income.“Look for a program out there with a mortgage lender that offers you the option for not having to pay for mortgage insurance and making less than 20 percent down payment that’s really the key,” said Lane.Lane also suggests you avoid making big purchases prior to applying for a home loan.“Don’t just go out and borrow for a car loan just before your gonna go out and get an home loan; keep that older car,” Lane recommended.Financial adviser Dennis Brewster said aiming for a condo instead of a home is a great way to get in the home buying game.“Anything to start building the equity helps – instead of paying rent,” said Brewster.Other pro tips include using 401K investments for a down payment, or having relatives co-sign the loan. 1704
