The effectiveness of the flu vaccine changes every year, according to the CDC. How well the vaccine fights off the illness may depend on which viruses are most dominant in a given year, which is difficult to predict. The vaccine may also reduce the severity of symptoms if you get the flu despite getting vaccinated, according to experts. 338

The case is one of several that could go before the high court raising the question of whether sex includes gender identity for the purpose of Title VII. The question is coming up more often as the transgender community grows more visible, especially in the workplace."The most common context in which you see some kind of discrimination is in the workplace," University of Texas professor law and CNN legal analyst Stephen Vladeck said. "This is the context in which there are the most claims that would rise or fall on whether gender identity is equivalent to sex."Now 57, Stephens began working in a funeral home in her 20s, preparing bodies for viewing, helping present the deceased in their best light. It was a way for her to bring a measure of comfort to people in their times of greatest need, she said. She moved to Michigan nearly 20 years ago to be with her wife, and returned to the funeral home industry. She joined Harris Funeral Homes as an apprentice in October 2007 and served as a funeral director/embalmer from April 2008 until her termination in August 2013.She enjoyed her work, but she struggled with her identity, she says. One day in November 2012, she went out to the backyard of her Redford home with a loaded gun."I couldn't see myself going backward or forward," she said. "I buried it as deep as I could for my whole life, but it doesn't stay buried."Then, she realized she loved herself and her life too much to give up, and went back inside the house, she says. Her wife, Donna Stephens, says she had noticed a change over time in her spouse. She thought it was depression, or worse, an affair. "When she came out and she told me, it was honestly sort of a relief," she said. "But it was very upsetting to find out the truth of what could have happened."Stephens had started seeing a counselor who recommended she write the letter for her workplace. She began working on it in early 2013, and hand-delivered it to her co-workers and boss on July 21, 2013."I always knew there was a chance they would go off the deep end, but I was really hoping they would be more tolerant of my decision," she said. "Losing my job was like a punch in the gut."Stephens' health began to decline due to kidney failure and she could no longer work. Money became tight and Donna Stephens had to take on extra jobs while she grappled with her spouse's transition. They sold their van, their camper and a piano to make ends meet. A close call with death in fall 2017 renewed her resolve to speak publicly about the case in between appointments with doctors and dialysis sessions. She's still determined to see her case through. "What they did to me was wrong, and I won't be the last," she said. "It's important that we treat one another as we would want to be treated. Religious freedom doesn't give you the right to override other people's freedoms." 2863

The editorial on Thursday could be considered surprising given Trump's support among evangelical voters. In a Fox News poll released last week that showed Trump losing in a general election bid against Joe Biden, polling found that 67 percent of evangelicals polled approved of Trump's job performance. "The facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents," Galli wrote. "That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration. He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused."To read the full editorial, click 1146

The collapse of a section of the structure early Tuesday morning sent concrete tumbling toward the ground, overturning cars and trapping people in the rubble.Fire services chief Emanuele Gissi told CNN Wednesday morning that no new survivors had been found overnight, but three more bodies had been discovered.Teams with dogs are aiding search-and-rescue operations, but rescuers are not hearing or seeing any signs of life, he said, adding that the situation around the bridge site is still dangerous.Photos: The Morandi Bridge collapse in Genoa, ItalyThe head of the Italian Civil Protection Agency, Angelo Borrelli, said about 30 vehicles and several heavy-duty trucks were on the affected section of the bridge when it gave way.Images from the scene showed a mangled mass of buckled vehicles and slabs of bitumen torn up as the bridge, built in the late 1960s, came tumbling down. Italy's President Sergio Mattarella said rescue efforts must be followed by a "serious and severe examination of the causes of what happened."One of the first rescuers to arrive at the site Tuesday told CNN he faced a "devastating scene," the ground littered with cars and debris, and people screaming to be freed."There are so many people that you don't know who to help," Paolo Tropiano said. "We even found a family -- a father, mother and a small child who were together, in a car, and unfortunately the three of them were dead."At one point, Tropiano said he felt debris falling on his head and looked up to see part of the bridge swaying above him. "We just stood still for a second, trying to work out what could happen next," he said.Tropiano is amazed that so many people survived the fall, and hoped others may still be found alive. "Miracles can happen," he said. "That is what we hope for, and what we are here for."With rescue efforts continuing and authorities working to formally identify victims, the city started two days of mourning. The Italian and European Union flags will fly at half-staff on municipal buildings on Wednesday and Thursday, and residents are invited to express their condolences and support for the victims and their families, the mayor's office said.Speaking Wednesday in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow at "the tragedy that occurred yesterday in Genoa" and prayed for all those affected. 2350
