SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An unresponsive man was pulled to shore Wednesday after possibly being swept out to sea by strong waves along Ocean Beach's coast.San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards responded to reports of the man not breathing at about 2 p.m. at Dog Beach. Lifeguards on jet skis found the man lodged into the rocks on the jetty, according to SDFD Sgt. Bruce Jamieson. He had reportedly been swept about 75 yards from shore, according to SDFD.Lifeguards performed CPR and rushed the man to a nearby hospital, but did not give an update on his condition.Witnesses said the man, who is approximately 50-years-old and from Nevada, may have been chasing after his dog in the water when he was pulled out to sea.A high surf advisory was issued for San Diego County's coastline from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday, bringing large sets and the threat of rip currents to the area's shores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A total of 444 total confirmed and probable cases have been identified among San Diego State University students, the school said Wednesday.According to SDSU, 440 students have tested positive for COVID-19 with four students who have probable cases.San Diego County health officials added that one of the students was hospitalized. Their condition is unclear at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was killed and her young son was taken to the hospital Friday morning following a two-car crash on a Mira Mesa street.Late Friday night, friends at a vigil for the young mother confirmed to 10News that her name is Judy. A photo of Judy left at the vigil is attached to this article. The collision in the 7200 block of Calle Cristobal was reported just after 7 a.m., according to San Diego police.“It’s not very safe at all.” Neighbor, Lara Janda had been saying this for years, about her own driveway at Canyon Park Villas in Mira Mesa. “There are so many accidents that we have seen, heard, or we’ve almost been in a few,” Janda said.Then, on Friday morning, she saw what she had feared for years.Through the heavy fog, she found her neighbor’s car, crunched into another. The cars were mangled. There was glass everywhere. “There was no movement or anyone coming out of the vehicle,” Janda said, of her neighbor’s white Acura Legend.Police said the victim pulled out of the driveway of an apartment complex and was traveling southbound when a collision occurred with a Honda Accord traveling westbound on Calle Cristobal.The 27-year-old woman died at the scene, and police said the woman’s 4-year-old boy sustained a broken pelvis, broken ribs, a fractured skull and broken right knee. The child’s injuries are considered life-threatening. He was transported to Scripps La Jolla, then to Rady’s Children’s Hospital for treatment.Police said the boy was in a child safety seat at the time of the crash.Janda said she is saddened by what she knew was eventually going to happen. She said she reported the dangerous intersection to traffic police at least four times in the last two years, but saw no change. She believed what made it so awful this morning, was the combination of the fog, the speeding drivers, and the blind intersection.“We have high foliage here, and this large pole here, so it’s very difficult to see who is coming around this corner,“ Janda said, pointing at the road.For one family, Good Friday has become the worst day of their lives.And a neighborhood is now shaken up, hoping an accident like this, will never happen again. 2229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman says she was the victim of a violent attack inside her hotel room at the high-end Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.Jacquee Renna is accusing the front desk staff of handing out her room number and a key without her permission. The hotel is staying tight-lipped about the apparent security breach, but it's giving details to the courts."I haven't felt safe since then," Renna said. "Suddenly, I heard the door kind of jiggle and I thought [room service] was coming to get our plates," she explains. She and her boyfriend were finishing dinner inside their hotel room when she says her ex-husband was able to unlock the door and break through the security latch."I saw the key in his hands so he had the key," she tells us. "He threw me over onto the bed. I could see rage in his face."Court documents claim her ex-husband punched her boyfriend in the face, dragged him at least twenty feet and kicked him in the head. Renna says her ex-husband then ran out to the parking lot, where he apparently slashed her boyfriend's tires, before leaving."[My boyfriend] had bruises and scrapes. I think we were both really in shock," she says. "The Omni has a responsibility to provide safe and secure rooms to their guests," says her attorney, Robert Fitzpatrick. He's helping her sue the hotel chain for negligence.Renna says that after the attack, the hotel manager apologized to her and said the hotel's front desk person had given the key to her ex-husband. Fitzpatrick adds, "Omni should never have given a key to the hotel room and they should have not disclosed the hotel room number."Hotel room attacks are uncommon but have made headlines in Southern California.Earlier this year, Covina police say security video caught a pastor lurking outside a Los Angeles hotel room, touching himself as he watched two girls who were alone inside. Officers report he later forced his way into the room and assaulted an 11-year-old. He was charged, but has pleaded "not guilty".Disturbing 2014 security video out of Kern County captured a front desk worker handing a room key to a man accused of posing as a female guest's boyfriend, before he reportedly fumbled with the room's peep hole, went inside, and sexually assaulted the woman while she was sleeping. He's seen running out with his pants around his ankles. He was convicted and a jury found that the hotel was partially responsible for the assault.It begs the question, who is responsible for making sure hotels in San Diego are keeping guests safe?  According to the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association, the San Diego Tourism Authority, local hotel negligence attorneys and private security professionals. None of them knew of any local, state or federal authority that has oversight. Hotels are left to police themselves. The Omni Hotel chain denied our request for an interview to discuss the new lawsuit, citing that it doesn't talk about pending litigation.
