(KGTV) -- A large number of applicants flooding California State University's website forced the school to extend its deadline. The university system tweeted Saturday that an “extremely high volume of applicants were attempting to submit applications.” As a result, CSU extended the deadline to December 1, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. RELATED: Audit says CSU stashed away .5 billion and raised tuitionIt’s unclear how many applicants were having trouble submitting applications Saturday. (KGTV) - A group of Massachusetts police officers and firefighters are being hailed as heroes after coming to the aid of a choking puppy this week.North Reading resident Megan Vitale stormed into a police station Sunday telling officers her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, Bodhi, was choking on food. An acquaintance came running in with Bodhi shortly after, the puppy limp and unresponsive in his arms, surveillance footage from the station showed.A group of officers came running out to begin administering first aid to the puppy. A group of North Reading firefighters also arrived at the station to help with back blows and chest compressions. After 10 minutes, the food blockage was finally dislodged and Bodhi was revived."Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation," North Reading Police Chief Murphy said. “We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery."Firefighters used a special oxygen tank designed for pets to help Bodhi get breathing again."Many of our firefighters have pets at home in their own families. We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything," Fire Chief Stats said.Bodhi was able to leave with Vitale to receive follow-up care from a veterinarian, according to the police department. 1534

(KGTV) - Income taxes on military pension is pushing a lot of people out of California. A new study proves that taking those taxes away would actually help both veterans and the state. For the people who served their country, it's tough to make it in California. "My wife just retired," said Matthew Schillingburg. "I just retired and so we're all on disposable income right now."He served in the army for more than 20 years. When his income is taxed by the state it can be hard to get by. "The thing that’s really holding us here, this community right here in San Diego that we grew up and love so much, our kids and our grandkids here," Schillingburg added.He joins 1.8 million military veterans who live in California. Many of them are looking to leave the state for more affordable areas where their pension won't take a hit. Assembly Bill 2394 is trying to change that. "If we can eliminate that, that helps us have more disposable income and we can consume more in the community that we love so much," said Schillingburg.According to a new study, if veterans were exempt from state taxes there would be big changes by the year 2025. More than 12,000 jobs would be added to the economy, along with 0 million in total personal income, million in state and local taxes and billion in total business sales. The bill is currently in committee. (KGTV) — Attorneys who challenged the use of Sharpies to complete election ballots in Phoenix are dismissing their lawsuit, according to the Associated Press.Roopali Desai, an attorney for Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, told the AP she was notified Saturday that lawyers who filed the lawsuit are ending their case.The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that election equipment was not able to record a voter's ballot because she used a Sharpie to complete it. Arizona election officials have said that voting with a Sharpie doesn't invalidate ballots.RELATED: San Diego Registrar of Voters: Using a Sharpie does not disqualify a ballotThe AP said no reason was immediately given as to why the lawyers dismissed their case.Election officials in Arizona and San Diego have said that ballots filled out with a Sharpie can still be counted. Even if the ink bleeds through a ballot, the ink won't mark another contest and cancel out votes on the other side, officials say."Regardless, using a Sharpie does not invalidate the ballot.
