(KGTV) - There were heated moments Wednesday while a group was defending the Christopher Columbus statue at discovery park in Chula Vista.Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone."You can't change history," he said. "We should be able to accept all groups, you can't lift one group by destroying another group.""We're here to oppose the removal of the statue," said Rene Trevino, a member of the Knights of Columbus.The statue, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has stirred up controversy in the past.Thursday the city's Human Relations Commission will vote on a resolution to not only remove the statue and change the name of discovery park, but to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day in Chula Vista.Last Columbus Day someone splashed red paint all over the statue, and before that someone plaque set in front of the statue was stolen."It's been a community family park and we've had opponents of Christopher Columbus use violence to vandalize and destroy the park multiple times, costing tax payers," said McCann.Many people have called the meaning behind the statue and the name of the park both painful and offensive.A woman in a car driving by the park Wednesday began shouting, "This is indigenous land, take that statue down!"She went on to say Christopher Columbus was just the beginning of an attempted assassination of Indigenous peoples.The topic caused people to clash at the park."You have these people trying to advocate for an idea that we're sick and tired of living under," said Rafael Bautista, who wants the statue removed.He was then confronted by a man who opposes the removal."What are you living under?" the man asked him. "What are you living under?"At one point Chula Vista Police officers arrived at the park, but things had settled down."Instead of trying to argue over things that happened over 500 years ago, we should be tackling today's issues," said McCann.Raeanne Herrera, a resident of Eastlake and part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation stopped by the park to offer her take."We can right the wrongs that have been done," she said. "That statue is the constant reminder of a beginning of a genocide. They tried, but they didn't."She went on to say change needs to start with education."Native American issues were never taught in school, what was I taught? CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said.The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)— The Chula Vista Police department is investigating a home invasion robbery that happened Saturday night on the 1600 block of Claret Cup Drive.80-year-old Don Oder believes he may have had an encounter with one of the suspects.He told 10News he was unloading the bags from his late night shopping trip Saturday and saw a man walk into his garage.“He says 'I’m thirsty. Can I have some water?' So I got him a glass of water,” Oder said. That was around 10:30 p.m. at Oder's home near Camarena Elementary School.At the time, Oder did not know that the person who asked for water could have been a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened moments prior. “I didn’t put two and two together right away,” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said someone fired a gun at a nearby condo on Claret Cup Drive around the same time.Two people entered and robbed the residents, then ran east. No one was hurt.Looking back now, Oder believes one of suspects may have been the man hiding in his garage.“Pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be seen,” Oder said. Oder describes him as a young, built, clean-cut man.He was surprised at the man’s get-away car.“He said, I’ve called an Uber and it’s going to be here in a few minutes.”Oder stayed with him for a few minutes until the man suddenly ran.Moments later, he and his grandson called police. The next morning, Oder’s son Tim was walking toward the crime scene.Tim Oder said he found a bundle of stuff next to a car along Exploration Falls Drive.“I pulled a hat out, walked a little further, and then I started pulling some gloves, and I thought, oh my God, these are white latex gloves!” Tim Oder said. The water cup and the bundle of items are now with Chula Vista Police, being processed for evidence. The Oders said the fact that one family had two run-ins with an unusual crime in a safe neighborhood is a crazy coincidence.“It seemed so strange, you know?” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said the suspects are still at large and asked the community to be vigilant. 2154
