ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - News of an arrest in connection to a fatal cyclist hit-and-run crash came as the victim's family mourned together on his favorite holiday. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. On Thanksgiving, they announced the arrest of a suspect, 41-year-old Jamison Connor, on an unrelated parole warrant related to weapons, drugs and DUI charges."Certainly a sense of relief," said Engelhardt.Engelhardt says news of the arrest came as Lentz's family came together."Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He's a food guy. Yesterday was a special time for them ... They were trying to focus on how great Kevin was. Emotionally exhausting is probably the best way to put it, all these mixed feelings ... Very difficult. Obviously they are happy that the arrest happened," said Engelhardt.Police have not said how they linked Connor to the crash, only saying detectives 'developed information' he was behind the wheel.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1566
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A homeless man used what little he has to give a selfless gift during a toy drive at a Colorado Walmart.Glen McCarthy walked to Walmart and got a cup of coffee. He was touched by the toy drive that was going on. He ended up buying a Barbie and a Hot Wheels set, but he couldn't stop thinking about a bike he saw."And I looked at that bike, and the bike was marked , but the tag underneath it said ," said McCarthy. It's not a lot of money for some, but for McCarthy, it was nearly everything. He went back to the hotel where he was staying and paid for another night. Back at the hotel, he still couldn't stop thinking about the bike.He walked back to Walmart and asked about the bike since the tag listed two different prices. Once a clerk realized what he was doing, she told him that he could have the bike for ."Another big reason I got to thinking, this is probably going to be my last Christmas. I'm no one, make some little kid happy," said McCarthy.McCarthy has always loved Christmas, and he realizes his time is running out. Doctors recently told him that his cancer is terminal, he has less than a year to live. "It took my losing everything to realize that I'm happier now struggling for everything in my life than I had when I had big money," said McCarthy.Despite being sick and homeless, he continues to volunteer at Senior Support Services in Denver. Staff at the center weren't surprised to hear what McCarthy did at Walmart."Totally sounded like Glen, yeah totally. So it's just amazing, he just has a real caring heart and willing to help people," said Julie Romero, Day Center Manager at Senior Support Services. In this season of giving, McCarthy knows it's about the joy that comes with making someone's day a little brighter. Thanks to him a lucky little girl or boy is sure to have a very special Christmas morning."I hope they enjoy the hell out of it," said McCarthy. 1938
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — The owner of a juice bar says she is "completely disheartened" after her business was targeted by a burglar for the third time in several years. On Tuesday morning, owner Vianey Delacruz says her sister went to open up when she saw the broken window and trail of glass. Delacruz opened up Get Juiced on S. Escondido Blvd. about four years ago."Feeling empty, not just in your pockets but in your heart," said Delacruz.Among the stolen items: A cash register, iPads, and two tablets, totaling about ,000."Basically took everything of value we need to run our business," said Delacruz. The pain of the theft is something Delacruz has felt two other times since 2015. In the first break-in, surveillance video showed an intruder in a hoodie picked the lock, before grabbing iPads, tablets and laptops, and a cash register. In another break-in, two men removed a window screen, then climbed in and took another cash register, iPads and speakers. It's unknown if any of the burglaries are linked. The total value lost in all the burglaries is more than ,000. Delacruz does not have insurance for the business, so the loss comes out of her pocket. Now she's wondering if staying open is worth it."We like running a business, but you get to a point where you can no longer run it," said Delacruz.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the business. 1383
Eyebrows were raised after a court filing Tuesday revealed former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, now under federal indictment, has three U.S. passports. On top of that, he had filed for 10 passport applications in as many years, according to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia's alleged meddling during the 2016 presidential election.Three passports? We wanted to find some answers. Can you have more than one passport?Yes. U.S. citizens are allowed to have more than one valid U.S. passport at the same time, according to the National Passport Information Center, which is a division of the U.S. State Department. But in most cases, you are only allowed to have two valid passports at a time, according to the NPIC.As NPIC notes on its website, holding a second passport "is the exception to the rule."It remains unclear why Manafort has three."Having three valid U.S. passports is incredibly unusual and normally would raise a red flag," said Valentina Meehan, owner of New York-based passport and visa expediting service Passport Plus. The State Department declined to comment on Manafort's passports. An official from State said in a statement that its general policy is that "no person shall bear or be in possession of more than one valid or potentially valid passport of the same type (regular, official, diplomatic, no-fee regular, or passport card) at any time, unless authorized by the Department of State."The spokesperson noted that requests for more than one passport are reviewed on a "case-by-case basis."How do you qualify for a second passport?Typically second passports are given to frequent travelers, especially those who travel overseas for business a lot, said Meehan. One reason you might hold a second passport: if your primary passport contains stamps or visas to other countries that may cause the country you plan to visit to deny you entry, according to the State Department. For instance, if your passport shows that you have traveled to Israel, countries like Lebanon and Libya may not allow you in, Meehan said.Another scenario in which you might be granted a second passport is if you have submitted your primary passport for a travel visa or some other administrative reason but have an immediate need to travel to another country."Sometimes your passport can be stuck with a consulate or embassy for weeks for a visa," said Meehan. "Suppose you suddenly have to travel to Canada or Europe while you are waiting to get your passport back. Then you can apply for a second passport."How often do people need to renew or apply for a passport?A primary U.S. passport is valid for 10 years. A second passport is typically valid for one to four years based on a passport agency's discretion, after which an application can be filed for renewal. 2831
Fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, a pioneer in high-end ready-to-wear clothing and famous for styling Audrey Hepburn's little black dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," has died at the age of 91, the House of Givenchy confirmed on Monday via its official Twitter account."The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. He will be greatly missed," the company announced. His longtime partner, former haute couture designer Philippe Venet, revealed in a statement to AFP that Givenchy died in his sleep on Saturday.Givenchy entered the world of fashion in 1944 at the age of 17, training under Parisian designer Jacques Fath. Before long, he had moved on to designing for several major fashion houses including Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli.Givenchy was in his mid-20s when he threw caution to the wind and launched his eponymous label in 1952. He maintained low overhead costs to keep down the prices of his designs. His first collection -- which championed the concept of separates and featured flawlessly detailed embroidered pieces, chic silk prints and sophisticated ball gowns -- immediately drew international recognition. From the off, he blazed a trail of innovation in the industry starting with his "Bettina blouse," named for popular French 1950s supermodel Bettina Graziani, which reintroduced tailored shirts into high fashion. But Givenchy was perhaps best known for his decades-long friendship with his muse Audrey Hepburn, which blossomed while she was filming her 1954 hit "Sabrina."Givenchy continued to style her outfits for "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Funny Face" and "How to Steal a Million" and their friendship would endure until Hepburn's death from cancer in 1993."It was a kind of marriage," Givenchy told the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper in 2015. "Little by little, our friendship grew and with it a confidence in each other," he added."There (was never) any criticism of the other person, no upsets."Enduring legacyOver the years, the haute couturier became a firm favorite of some of the world's most glamorous and highly admired A-listers.When Jackie Kennedy accompanied her husband to Paris in 1961, she turned to Givenchy to help dress her."It was not the same relationship or friendship that I had with Audrey," the couturier said in 2012 of his work with Kennedy. "The American people felt emotion for Jackie, but they preferred to have an American couturier design her dresses when they came to France for a state visit. Jackie asked for more than 10 or 15 pieces, saying 'I don't know if I can be dressed by a French designer.'"He continued: "We did all the fittings in secret. Then after the event at Versailles, Jackie sent me a little postcard to tell me that General de Gaulle gave her a very nice compliment. He said, 'Madame, this evening you look like a Parisienne.'"During his illustrious career, Givenchy also styled the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Grace of Monaco.Today, his label continues to be relevant and innovative, remaining incredibly popular with celebrity fans including Beyoncé, Kanye West and Rihanna. Beyoncé's love of the fashion house's style is well-known, with her having worn its creations to the last five Met Galas she attended between 2012 and 2016 (she didn't attend the gala in 2017).
