BARRIO LOGAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- Business owners in Barrio Logan are unhappy with the San Diego City Council's decision to fund the three temporary homeless tents opening on December 1st. The council voted 8-1 on Tuesday in favor of the funding. Council-member Alvarez was the only one to vote no, saying the city missed a chance to really solve the problem. The owners of Ryan Bros Coffee say their shop already deals with homeless on a regular basis. Their shop is less than half a mile away from one of the tents schedule to go up on 16th and Newton. Co-owner Tom Ryan says they’ve had people overdose in the bathroom or collapse, sick on the ground inside the store. Ryan’s staff is getting ready to see the number of homeless go up during the winter. The other two tents are in the Midway District and the East Village.  856

Bottles of water, bags of clothes and foldout tables are set up and ready at a Phoenix church awaiting the next busload of asylum-seeking families released by ICE.Pastor Angel Campos at Monte Vista Cross-Cultural Church confirms his church is temporarily housing families upon their release from ICE. "They leave their homes; they leave everything," Campos said. "They say that their belongings mean nothing without their lives."Back in October, ICE officials announced they were releasing an increased number of families amid a surge of them showing up at the border and a limit to how long they can detain families. "You hear the stories; you hear the pain," Campos said. An unknown number of Phoenix-area churches are temporarily taking in the families upon their release from ICE as they work to connect with other relatives across the country. The families are equipped with ankle monitors and still have to go through the immigration court process.Statistics show the number of "family units" that are apprehended along the Southwest border has surged in recent months. Campos says he reached out to ICE to offer up his church to help with this process. He says he is surprised by how many people have shown up in buses, estimating more than 800 people have come through his church since early October, with the most recent group of people arriving this past Thursday. Campos said nearly everyone from that group has since left the church. "We have to be strong, not to fall in love with them so much that it hurts you when they leave," Campos said. Campos said donations, including clothes and bottled water, are welcome.  1692

WHY MONTANA MATTERSWhile President Donald Trump will likely easily win Montana in the presidential race, when it comes to the Senate race, things are far from certain. That's because incumbent Republican Senator Steve Daines is battling incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Bullock. The winner will represent Montana for the next six years. The race is considered by most, including the Cook Political Report, a toss-up. During a recent interview, Daines explained how this race is a toss-up. "I'm running against an incumbent Governor," Daines said near his home in Belgrade, Montana. While Daines admitted Montanans have an independent streak, he believes ultimately supporters of Trump will support his campaign. "If you sum up what I stand for it's more high paying jobs and less government," Daines said. Meanwhile, Bullock says voters may be backing Trump in Montana but they are aren't afraid to back a Democrat for Senate. "A quarter of my voters voted for Donald Trump," Bullock told Scripps' National Political Editor Joe St. George. "It's about whether somebody is going to fight for you along the way," Bullock added. WHAT'S AT STAKE FOR THE SENATECurrently, Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the United States Senate. While Republicans are expected to pick up Alabama this election, Democrats believe they are in position to take back 4 states at least.If, for instance, Democrats win Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina, depending on who is in the White House, control of the entire United States Senate will come down to Montana. "This will be the most expensive election in Montana history," Mike Dennison, a longtime political reporter in the state, said. Dennison, who works for Scripps' Montana News Network, estimates over million will be spent on this race and on relatively few undecided voters. BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK, N.J. — A dead whale is sitting on a New Jersey state park beach after a Christmas storm blew through the northeast.The humpback whale is near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Ocean County. It is unclear at this time how the roughly 20-foot-long whale died, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a marine animal focused organization that responded to the whale Saturday. They said it could have been hit by a boat or something else during the storm, or died from contracting a disease. In addition to coming ashore on a holiday weekend, when few state employees are working, the below-freezing temperatures are also delaying the whale’s removal.“The whale’s too frozen,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. “We can’t even cut into the blubber, it’s too thick and frozen.”Schoelkopf believes the dead whale was washed ashore on Christmas Eve, then taken back out to sea on Christmas as a large storm came through, and then came back ashore Saturday.Anyone visiting the area should stay clear, Schoelkopf said, because of the possibility for diseases to be in the carcass.Whale watching boats had spotted the whale alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook bay, where it had been photographed feeding, Schoelkopf said.In September, a different humpback whale was found dead off the Jersey Shore after being entangled. Another dead humpback whale was found floating off Cape May in November.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event” for humpback whales in 2017, after high numbers of whales were found dead from Maine to North Carolina.
