SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed early this evening in a fiery crash on Interstate 805 in Serra Mesa.The fatal accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway near Kearny Villa Road shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The wreck left the victim's two-wheeler in flames on the roadway and forced a closure of the two left-hand northbound lanes of the interstate in the area, the CHP reported. 450

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today publicly identified a young man who was fatally shot last week during a fight near Horton Plaza.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found Angel Maravilla, 22, mortally wounded at E Street and Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.Medics took Maravilla to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.``The initial investigation revealed the victim and a companion were involved in an altercation with a third man,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``At some point during the altercation, the (third man) pulled a firearm and shot the victim.''The reason for the fight was unclear. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person was killed today during a multi-vehicle traffic crash on the Interstate 15 Express in San Diego.The crash on the southbound route, north of Carmel Mountain Road, occurred at about 7:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.The crashed involved at least four to five vehicles, the CHP said.There was no other immediate information. 372
