With that, the questions and concerns about what that means for drivers out on the roads.“I think we will see an increase in DUI marijuana’s,” said Officer John Perdue, a San Diego Police officer in the traffic division.Perdue is an expert at DUI and drug recognition. Since November 8, 2016, when California voters approved Prop. 64, or the adult use of marijuana act, he’s been hearing the same thing when he comes across drivers he suspects are driving high.“Their first reaction is one of two, either A. ‘I have a medical marijuana card’, or B. ‘marijuana is legal.’ And I have to remind them, so is alcohol, but you still can’t drive under the influence of it,” Perdue said.How exactly will police be able to tell if someone is driving high?One tool that officers will use to help is the Drager Drugtest 5000, a presumptive drug screening test that can detect seven types of drugs in a person’s system.Like an alcohol breathalyzer, Perdue said, “the person has every right to refuse this.” But unlike alcohol, it doesn’t have a percent limit.If the Drager reads positive, Perdue said, “it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re impaired or under the influence, it just says that chemical or drug is in their body.”  So to be arrested for DUI, it’s still up to the officer to decide if the driver shows impairment.But that can be tough. Look at the Drager as an extra tool that’s used along with field sobriety tests, what an officer smells, sees or finds in the car, to formulate that officer’s opinion of whether a driver is high.“The hardest thing will be, because there is no per se limit right now, the officers are really going to have to be aware of the signs and symptoms,” Perdue said. 1808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show announced this year's air and ground military event has been canceled citing the coronavirus pandemic.The 66-year-old air acrobatics demonstration is one of the nation's largest military air shows drawing several hundred thousand spectators over the three-day weekend event.MCAS Miramar tweeted, "Due to the continuing spread and health concerns of #COVID19, @MCASMiramarCA must formally announce the cancellation of the 2020 Miramar Air Show. It is a disappointment to us as well as many across the world, but the safety of our Marines and fellow San Diegans must come first."This is the first time the event has been canceled since 2013 when the U.S. Department of Defense slashed budgets due to a government shutdown.This year's event was scheduled for September 25-27. Officials said they are aiming to bring back the event next year.“While we had initially hoped to host the show and help usher in a re-opened San Diego, there are still a great many risks posed with a mass gathering of this size and scale to do it in a way that ensures our guests absolute safety," said Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - National Guard troops have not been at the border for too long, but are already making their presence felt.Border Patrol officers last week arrested a 31-year-old woman on Interstate 15 they say was transporting 51 bundles of methamphetamine in her vehicle.The woman's vehicle was transported to a Border Patrol facility where agents continued searching the vehicle with the help of National Guardsman who have recently been deployed to the border.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderDuring the secondary search, agents initially did not locate any additional narcotics, officials said. Eventually, a National Guardsman found another 11 bundles of meth hidden deep within a door panel.In all, border agents discovered more than 68 pounds of meth valued at 6,000."Although the California National Guardsman have been on duty for only a couple of weeks, they have quickly fit in and are a great asset in assisting the Border Patrol to protect our communities," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.The woman has been turned over to Riverside County law enforcement and faces narcotics smuggling charges.RELATED: Thousands of kids a year migrate to the US alone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man in City Heights Wednesday afternoon.According to San Diego Police, the man was shot in the back at the intersection of Fairmont Avenue and Thorn Street near Clark Middle School and Manzanita Canyon.The shooter left the area with two other men, according to San Diego Police officer Billy Hernandez. The three were described as Asian men, one in a white shirt with the letters "SD" on it in red printing, the others in black shirts, Hernandez said.Police shut down traffic near the shooting scene and searched the area with a helicopter and ground crews. Officers found a gun possibly connected to the case in an alley. There was no sign of the shooter.Paramedics took the shooting victim to the hospital.
