(KGTV) - Alpine parents fighting to keep sexually violent predators our of their neighborhood are more frustrated after hearing the State Department of Hospitals can't help them.10News first brought you this story in March. On Dec. 14, neighbors say a neighbor approached someone walking around a vacant property next door and found out she was an investigator for the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force (SAFE)."[They were] looking at the property as a possible placement for sexual predators," Father Keith Martin said holding his three-month-old baby girl. In December, they wrote a pile of letters to anyone they could reach, successfully keeping a convicted sexual predator out of their neighborhood.Now they want to ensure the home is removed from the list for good. The problem is the State Department of Hospitals says the homeowner is the one who agrees to rent to the predators. Neighbors want to find a workaround, "I think that's kinda silly, if they can put an address on a list they can take it off, I don't know what the big problem is," Grandfather of nine James Greaney said. Across the West Coast, entire towns are being leveled by historic wildfires, and one northern California county is facing this horror for the second time in two years.Berry Creek’s hilly terrain is still smoldering, as homeowners anxiously wait to be let back into the area, although many already know they don’t have homes to come back to.“When they see the smoke or hear about a fire, their PTSD, whether you’re civilian or former military, it kicks in,” said resident Michael Zylstra, who evacuated from his home.Steve Kaufmann, the public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, compared the fires to a freight train.A freight train of fire, swallowing everything in its path.“When we have a fire like this, it makes for number one, explosive, but we are seeing erratic fire behavior we’ve never seen in our career,” Kaufmann said.Fires so erratic it’s capable of leaving a town unrecognizable.Michael Zylstra says his aunt and uncle won’t have a home to come back to. Miles of Berry Creek homes have been reduced to rubble.“It’s a scenario where the vegetation is completely bone dry,” he described.The town is a casualty of the North Complex Fire. Fueled by years of drought and extreme winds, it’s burned over 260,000 acres in northern California.“It took a huge toll on the community,” Kaufmann recalled. “It hit because it moved so fast, and we just didn’t have the resources to put in there to defend every structure involved.”With resources spread across 28 major fires, Kaufmann says it’s a challenge the state has had to adapt to.“We’re always prepared for the worst-case scenario,” he said. “This is probably definitely one of the worst cases we’ve seen in years.”Zylstra evacuated his home six days ago in the nearby town of Cherokee. As he waits for news, he helps fellow veterans cope with the trauma.“It’s been stressful,” he said. “They’re anxious, they get nervous, they don’t know what to do, they can’t sleep.”In large part because the community went through this nearly two years ago when the Camp Fire ripped through paradise killing 85 people and destroying nearly 19,000 structures.“It’s very painful memories for a lot of them,” Zylstra said.It’s painful for many to rebuild.“[In] a lot of people’s eyes, it will never be what it was; it will never ever be what it was in 20-30 years, what it used to be,” he said.And now, another town must also try and navigate life forever changed by fire.“We just need to all work together for that one common goal, to take care of each other,” Zylstra said. 2573

A handful of airports across the country are now offering tests for passengers.It's no secret that the global pandemic has turned the travel and airline industry upside down. The Airport Council International North America is known as the "voice of airports."“I look at airports, at cities within cities and anything that would affect the city would affect the airport and that’s what we do,” says CEO Kevin Burke.“Testing is that key that unlocks travel,” he added.Tampa International Airport was the first to jump on board with a program that was the first-of-its-kind in the nation. They offer both the PCR and rapid tests to anyone with proof of travel.“We’ve tested more than 4,100 passengers. It's gained in popularity. Passengers know we’re providing the testing at the airport and I will tell you before they open at 7:30 every morning, there’s 20 plus passengers waiting in line," says John Tiliacos, executive VP of airport operations.He said they launched the program in early October in hopes of instilling confidence and encouraging travel."Given the environment we’re in with this pandemic, we’ve got to do everything we can as an industry both airline or airport industry. We’ve got to do everything we can to breathe life back into this industry and get it back up on its feet and running again,” Tiliacos said.Since then, they've fielded calls from other airports inquiring about the program. If a passenger gets a negative test, they go on about their day. But, if it's positive, ACI-NA says, it's not the airports' responsibility to escort the passenger out.“They’ve gotten very few passengers that have tested positive but they’ve had a couple and they can’t proceed past that because TSA is not going to let them through a checkpoint with a positive read," said Burke.While an increase in testing is a good thing, doctors advise that it's not a guarantee by any means.“This test isn’t an insurance policy for the rest of the week, the rest of the month or the rest of your life, it tells you what your status is right now,” says Dr. Beth Thielen, an infectious disease physician and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School.“For example, if you went to a bar the night before you flew and you were around 100 people without masks, you potentially could be infected, but if you take a test at the airport the next day, you may very well test negative and a week down the road, you may develop symptoms and be capable of spreading COVID,” says Dr. Thielen.But she also says this program is a start, and it helps people make better decisions about what they're doing and where they're going. ACI-NA says testing, masks, social distancing, hand washing and cleaning all play an important role in getting people back on board."If our industry is going to survive and thrive when a vaccine is there and people come back to travel, we have to take the steps now to make people comfortable not only now but in the future when they’re booking future travel,” said Burke.While airlines are trying to instill confidence in air travel, many public health experts are advising against traveling as coronavirus cases spike throughout the US.Earlier this week, The CDC recommended Americans not travel for Thanksgiving during the current spike in coronavirus cases nationwide.“As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website reads. “Travel may increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.
