SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A gang member was sentenced to more than 126 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of Navy pilot James Celani at Horton Plaza in 2017."This is not living. This is hell," said Celani's cousin, Sean, who was also shot in the incident. "Mr. Morris killed my happiness and my life."Sean, who asked not to have his last name revealed, and Celani were at the Mad House Comedy Club that night. Upon leaving the club, they walked past a group of men, including Morris. Sean said he offered an innocent greeting, "What's up, brother?" At that point, Morris pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Celani and hitting Sean in the leg. Prosecutors say Morris, who has a history of violence, was angry because of a fight that evening with his girlfriend.Celani's wife spoke during a victim impact statement, describing how she and their three children have suffered since her husband's murder. She called for Morris to get the maximum sentence. "The system couldn't or wouldn't protect Jim and Sean from Arrow Morris, but you can safeguard society from Arrow Morris by letting the punishment fit the crime and sending him to prison for the rest of his life."Morris has 60 days to appeal his sentence. 1221

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— San Diegans are bracing for yet another round of gas price increases. Mike Metroianis has a love-hate relationship with driving.“I do about 300 miles on any given day,” Metroianis said. It is how he makes his living as an Uber and Lyft driver. But it is also why he has to spend a lot of money. He checks gas stations around his routes, always looks for the best prices. “25 cents makes a huge difference,” Metroianis said. According to AAA, the average national price of regular gas is .76 per gallon. But in California, it’s .57 per gallon. Experts say the increases are a result of the unrest in Europe and the Middle East, combined with high demand in the United States. “You dread it every time,” Metroianis said. “You see your gas go down and you’re like… You made all this money, and next thing you know, you’re throwing it right back in the tank. It’s ridiculous.”So ridiculous, Robin Bartlet has completely stopped getting regular gas for her 28-gallon Chevy Avalanche. Luckily, her car takes Flex Fuel, which only costs her .89 per gallon, at a 76 Station in Kearny Mesa. The same station is charging .29 per gallon for regular gas.“Holy sugar!” Bartlet said, looking at the sign for the regular gas. Experts say prices are not getting any sweeter, any time soon. By Memorial Day weekend, Californians may have to pump out on average, more than a gallon. Governor candidate, Cole Harris said, at the candidate forum. “Jerry Brown has certainly left a mark in our state over the years,” Judge Steven Bailey said. Of those statistics, there is an all-time-high in the number of undeclared or “No-Party-Preference” voters. San Diego County Registrar of Voters, Michael Vu, said there are 1.77 million registered voters in the county, the highest it has ever been.
