SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least nine parked vehicles has their windows smashed with a bat in Oak Park early Monday morning. The vandalism happened on the 5600 block of Redwood Street around 1 a.m. Car windows along Redwood Street and Thorn Street were smashed. A witness told 10News he was returning home when he noticed shattered pieces of glass on the ground and spotted two suspects trying to get away in a white car with no license plates. The man says he followed the suspects down Thorn Street before they got away. Police are searching for the suspects and say nothing appears to have been stolen from the vehicles. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California health officials released new guidelines for indoor and outdoor youth sports, whether it is school-related, community sponsored, or club sports.The new guidance from the state’s Department of Public Health also applies to recreational adult sports.According to the state, inter-team competitions will not be allowed until Jan. 25, 2021, at the earliest. State officials will revisit this plan during the first week of January to see if any changes need to be made.Players and teams are allowed to practice, but health and safety measures -- such as social distancing -- must be in place.In the new guidelines, sports are categorized by indoor or outdoor, and then they are classified under three categories: low-contact, moderate-contact, and high-contact. The sports are then grouped based on risk tier.For San Diego County, which is in the state’s purple tier as of Dec. 15, only outdoor low-contact sports -- which includes golf, tennis, and swimming -- are allowed to compete.Once the county reaches the red tier, sports like baseball, softball, and cheerleading will be able to compete.Sports such as basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball would not be allowed to compete until San Diego County is in the state’s orange tier.The state’s new guidance comes months after children, parents, and coaches held rallies and voiced their frustrations about not being able to play.Because of the state’s rules, many teams -- specifically baseball and soccer -- have traveled to states like Arizona to play competitively because of less strict rules.Under California’s new guidance, teams can only compete against teams from the same county, and they cannot compete outside of the state.Click here to view the state's complete guidelines 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Anyone touched by Alzheimer's knows how painful the disease is. "It's affected my family. It's affected most families. It's such a prevalent disease. As people get older, it becomes quite likely this will become an issue," said Paul Aisen, director of USC's Alzheimer's Therapeutic Research Clinic (ACTC).Aisen's team began their research in San Diego many years ago and teamed up with USC about four years ago. He's spent over 30 years trying to solve Alzheimer's mysteries and is leading the upcoming clinical trial.Aisen says the large-scale study is the culmination of decades of work from scientists worldwide."Our focus lately has been trying to alter the disease, prevent it, or significantly slow its progression. How should we do that? We think attacking amyloid early is the most promising approach," said Aisen. Researchers believe sticky amyloid deposits, which form on the brain later in life, start the Alzheimer's process. Aging, genetics, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to amyloid build-up.The worldwide clinical trial aims to target amyloid. A drug called BAN2401 will be delivered intravenously, designed to bind to the sticky amyloid. The binding neutralizes beta amyloid and helps "tag" it, so the immune system can recognize it and clear it from the brain. A previous phase 2 study showed that BAN2401 removes brain amyloid and possibly slows cognitive decline.They're seeking participants over 50 who are not yet showing symptoms of Alzheimer's but do have elevated amounts of amyloid on their brain. Researchers can determine that through a PET scan or spinal tap. "We think that the most promising approach of all is to take a vigorous attack on amyloid while the brain is still functioning normally. And we can see amyloid in people many years before they develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's."Investigators hope that by treating a patient with BAN2401 very early in the disease, before symptoms occur, it will significantly slow disease progression. "If we're successful, it will have a huge impact on human health," said Aisen. There will be 100 sites worldwide for the study, including major cities like San Diego and Los Angeles. Study participants will receive treatment for four years, given either the drug or a placebo. Results are expected in seven years, Aisen says.
