SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters on alert after seeing the latest Wildland Fire Potential Outlook maps released by the National Interagency Fire Center. The maps show San Diego with an above average wildfire potential that increases from June through August and starts to wane slightly in September.Cal Fire Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said the outlook focuses on three things; "We're dealing with fuel, weather and topography." Shoots said the agency can't do anything about the topography or weather, but every neighbor can do their part reducing fuel, especially around their home.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeShoots acknowledged the winter weather gave San Diego County a reprieve fire-wise, but it posed a new problem: new growth that's already drying out."A grass fire can run a lot faster and spread faster which means our resources are spread out quicker, and then that means it has the heat and momentum to build up to the bigger fuels," Shoots said.Just down the road, a neighbor had landscapers pruning her yard."I think it's very important to have this done...helps the whole neighborhood," said the woman named Gene.Cal Fire said the best time to get the landscaping work done is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.Last week, neighbors in Rancho Santa Fe saw the danger become a reality when Cal Fire said a landscaping crew using the lawn mower sparked a 3-acre fire near Fairbanks Ranch."It's starting to get to the point where it's too late; we need you to clear while we have the chance," Shoots said, referring to hot weather making these incidents more likely."We need all the help we can get," he said."Definitely, they've got a lot of work ahead of them, I think," Gene said.Cal Fire reported this year to June 16th, there have been 1,386 fires, burning 11,954 acres across the state. Last year at the same time, it was about half that, 2,154 fires, burning 20,791 acres. Cal Fire says fires are becoming more common, with 248 wildfires over the past week. 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doorbell cameras show teen pranks getting more destructive and some wonder if the cameras themselves could be sparking some of the damage. Videos of young kids playing 'Ding Dong Ditch' with doorbells are nothing new, but some teens are now taking it to another level. "Very disturbing," said Lilly, a homeowner who lives on Hilltop Drive in Chollas View. In the last few months on three different occasions, rocks or bottles have been thrown at her home and car. Her car's back window was shattered during one incident. "All the kids were laughing and running away," said Lilly.Each time, she caught at least one middle-school-aged boy running from her home. Several cameras are clearly mounted on the front of her house. In one video from the past week, a groups of boys walks past her lawn and one of them rips out her solar lights. Last Tuesday night in Lemon Grove, three teens are seen walking in front of a home. Suddenly when one walks toward the door, motioning to his leg. With a big smile on his face, the teen kicks the door forcefully and runs off. The homeowner posted on the Neighbors by Ring app that it caused major damage to his frame and paint. In that case, the doorbell camera was again in plain sight. They're meant to deter crime and they often do, but could surveillance camera in these cases be adding to the motivation for these teens? One San Diegan posting on the app about 'truth-or-dare games' in his neighborhood with young kids and dares involving surveillance cameras."Really scary to think these are younger kids with young minds making horrible choices ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members in the South Bay mourning the death of a beloved grandfather and foster parent from coronavirus.Enrique Gonzalez, 68, was doing everything right. He was staying at home. His family was shopping for him. A month ago, he got sick."Runny nose, body aches, fever," said his nephew, Fernando Gonzalez.Fernando says within a week, Gonzalez tested positive for COVID-19."As soon as he had trouble breathing and talking, we took him to the hospital," said Fernando.Doctors put him on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later, after suffering cardiac arrest, his condition deteriorated. A nurse helped his large family talk to him through Facetime calls."Told him jokes, playing music for him ... praying for him. Really tough not to be in the room," said Fernando.A week ago, Gonzalez passed away."Just devastating to everybody," said Fernando.Fernando says the family now grieving the loss of a hard-working man with the biggest of hearts. After Gonzalez retired from decades working in construction, he and his wife decided to become foster parents, fostering over 20 children in the past 4 years."Even when he passed away, still fostering an infant ...
