SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A world-famous artist known for his marine life artwork and conservation stopped by his own gallery in Seaport Village Tuesday.Wyland spoke with 10News about his connection to Southern California and the lives he's changing through his artwork.Peggy Williams was visiting San Diego from Idaho this week. She said she bought her first Wyland about 30 years ago."His drawings and his work of the marine life is so real," Williams said. "It's kinda cool to pop in here today and run into him. Hey, maybe we need to protect our ocean, our environment," Wyland said.He's painted 100 ocean murals, including one still in downtown San Diego."I was inspired by Jaques Cousteau. He was like my hero," Wyland said. "I think I'm a better sculptor than painter."But he's also working on a theme called "Starry Seas," which he brought to life in front of our 10News cameras."I thought, what if Vincent van Gogh, what if he painted underwater?" Wyland said as he plopped paint directly from the tube to the canvas. "It just gives it a really organic, really nice impressionist type feel."He said his childhood helped shaped his attitude toward conservation."It was the first Earth Day. Of course, Green Peace was coming along," Wyland recalled. "When I came to California and I saw the Pacific Ocean and I saw a grey whale on that I day, I knew that was my place, that was my role."To educate and inspire the next generation of artists, Wyland is leading a national challenge."We're doing a national Wyland art challenge. It's free to every school, every student," the artist said. "With all the crazy stuff going on in the world, we need more heart and more art and I'm going to always brings that."Wyland's galleries will celebrate their 40th anniversary next year. His next big project will be 100 monuments in 100 cities - and he said San Diego is high on that list. 2124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a string of recent fires in San Diego County and statewide, it’s no secret that so-called fire season, which California fire agencies say is now year round, is getting worse.So far this year, Cal Fire has battled nearly 3,800 wildfires that have so far scorched more than 292,000 acres.That figure shows a sharp increase from previous years and is far above average for this time of year.According to Cal Fire, the last five years have, on average, seen just over 118,800 acres burned statewide by this time."We are seeing more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen," said Jonathan Cox, Cal Fire regional Battalion Chief.The increasing danger even has agencies like the US Department of Agriculture warning of the risks. As far as major fire incidents, so far this year there have been well over 100. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the visible reminders of local wildfires may be gone, San Diego fire officials say what’s left over can still cause a lot of problems especially as the region expects to get rain this weekend.After an intense wildfire happens, the burned vegetation and charred soil forms a water repellant layer that blocks water absorption -- which means the next time it rains, there’s potential for flooding.Cal Fire wants to remind residents to prepare before the rain arrives.Thomas Shoots, a spokesperson for Cal Fire, said, “Anyone near the Valley Fire needs to be prepared for any type of debris or mud flows. They need to have sandbags and the area around their home prepped so that everything looks OK.”In September, the county gave residents free supplies to make sandbags so people could begin their preps for the rainy season.County information on free sandbag availability can be found here.The City of San Diego is also offering sandbags for residents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriffs deputies detained a man in Lemon Grove this afternoon, who may be connected to an early morning carjacking.It was supposed to be a routine check-up. A 76-year-old woman was going in for a 7 a.m. eye appointment at a medical office on the 3900 block of Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest.But she never made it.“The man with the gun pointed it at the woman, so I guess it was just taking place, and she scrammed out of there and called 911," a woman named Nancy said. She said her friend witnessed the carjacking happen from across the parking structure.San Diego Police detectives said a shorter, thin, Hispanic man with short hair approached the grandmother, pointed a gun at her face, stole her purse, and drove off in her gray Mazda 3.Officers notified all nearby agencies to search for that car.Then at 9:45 a.m., the car was found on Lemon Grove Way in Lemon Grove. But it was in bad condition. “A few hours later, the Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a hit-and-run that involved that very vehicle, the victim’s vehicle," Lt. Andrew Hoffman of the San Diego Police Department said. Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda 3 hit a parked red Honda Civic, veered into a pole, then ran away.For two hours, investigators set up a perimeter of the area and used a helicopter to look for the car-jacking and hit-and-run suspect. But they came up empty.Then at 2 p.m., detectives did a secondary search of the apartment complex.That is when one of the deputies recognized a wanted man and arrested him. “I guess the guy walked out of the apartment, the other officer saw him from the back of the cop car, must have recognized him," witness Floyd Bloom said. "So that’s when they yanked him out of the car. But he reached for the officer’s taser and his gun. And so they tased him.”San Diego sheriffs deputies said the man they detained is a tall, thin Caucasian man, who was possibly wearing a disguise.Detectives said a curly, black-haired wig fell off of the man during his struggle with police. They also found a rifle and ammunition in the back of his trunk.San Diego County Sheriffs deputies detained the man, then handed him over to the San Diego Police department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, the White House announced that it has pardoned Margaret Hunter one day after granting a pardon to former Congressman Duncan Hunter over misuse of campaign funds.Margaret Hunter was sentenced to eight months of home confinement and three years probation after she pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge.
