ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Within a quiet lab, are scattered fragments of America’s storied past.“I never thought I'd be doing anything like this,” said Kenneth McNeill, an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.He also spent three years in the reserves and now is a part of the “Veterans Curation Program,” which provides training in archiving and archaeology.“I think one thing that happens a lot is that we just exist, and we don't think about things that happened in the past,” McNeill said.In the lab, though, the past is never out of reach.The artifacts come from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who discovered the items at sites across the country during the excavation and construction of major projects, like dams and canals.“The Army Corps of Engineers had a need for people to do this curation work and the veterans have a need to find work and gain new skills and feel comfortable getting back into the workforce,” said Sarah Janesko, administrator of the Veterans Curation Program.The lab spaces are provided around the country by New South Associates, a company which specializes in archaeology and partnered with the Army Corps to train the veterans.“They feel like they're part of this larger mission to preserve our history and the cultural materials that come with it,” Janesko said.In just over 10 years, the Army Corps said the program has trained nearly 700 veterans, with 72% of them landing permanent jobs, some with the Smithsonian and National Park Service, while another 19% have gone on to further their studies in college.“It also gives us a sense of purpose, which is something I think veterans sometimes need when they separate from the military,” McNeill said. “We live in an area that has a lot of history to it. So, it's good that we are helping restore some of these things.”All of this happening, while they gain new skills, along with a deeper appreciation of the past. 1909

All national forests in California will close Wednesday evening as the state sees “explosive growth of fires throughout” the state.The U.S. Forest Service closed eight national forests in Southern California Monday night, and the rapid growth Tuesday in windy weather conditions led to the decision to close the remaining ten forest areas.Nearly 2.3 million acres have burned already this year, setting a state record. Roughly two dozen wildfires are burning currently. “The number of large fires and extreme fire behavior we are seeing across the State is historic," said Regional Forester Randy Moore in a release. "These temporary closures are necessary to protect the public and our firefighters, and we will keep them in place until conditions improve and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely.”More than 140 people had to be rescued from the path of the Creek Fire this week, some were hikers and campers trapped without a way to escape the rapidly spreading flames. The Creek Fire is burning in part of the Sierra National Forest, which was closed to visitors on Monday.The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in California, which take up almost 20 million acres. The woman swapped out her mask for one that said ‘Blue Lives Matter’ and sat back down next to Poe."That woman was trying to entice me into an argument because there was no need for her to flip that mask in my presence," Poe later told USA Today.According to Poe, after take-off, the woman said “I support blue lives because I support officers.”“I explained to her blue lives do not exist. After the Trump Campaign requested the presidential debates be moved closer to the election because some states will begin mail-in voting while the debates are being held, the Commission on Presidential Debates denied the campaign’s request.In a letter addressed to Trump campaign surrogate Rudolph Giuliani, the commission said it will stick with its planned three presidential debates – the first being held on September 29, and final one on October 22.“ In 2016, when the debate schedule was similar, only .0069% of the electorate had voted at the time of the first debate.
