SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Famed stand-up comedian Jo Koy is being recognized by the City of San Diego in honor of Filipino American History Month. On Friday, Oct. 16, District 6 City Councilman Chris Cate will proclaim the day “Jo Koy Day” in San Diego. The ceremony, which will take place in Mira Mesa on Friday afternoon, will be emceed by ABC 10News reporter Melissa Mecija. The 49-year-old Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Herbert, has established himself as one of the most popular comedians in the world in recent years, with several Netflix specials, sold-out comedy tours, and other media endeavors under his belt.In a statement, Cate, a second-generation Filipino-American, said: “Jo Koy is iconic and a trailblazer. His homage to the Philippines has reached the lives of millions of people worldwide. Filipino cuisine, culture, and arts are flourishing in District 6, and I am excited to celebrate Jo Koy and recognize his accomplishments.”According to Cate’s office, 1 in every 3 District 6 residents is of Asian-American descent. The district consists of Clairemont Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Rancho Pe?asquitos, and Sorrento Valley.Cate’s office added: “Filipino American History Month commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred in October of 1587 when Luzones Indios landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Democrat Ammar-Campa Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa have emerged as the favorites to represent East County's 50th Congressional District, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. The 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll comes one week before the March primary, in which voters will head to the polls for the first time since Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of felony campaign fraud. The poll, of 552 likely voters, shows Campa-Najjar, the lone household Democrat, leading the field with 35 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Issa, a Republican, comes in second with 21 percent, with former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio at 15 percent. The poll had 12 percent undecided and State Sen. Brian Jones, a Republican, at 7 percent. 837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dr. Scott Overcash and the staff at La Mesa-based laboratory eStudySite are preparing for what could be a history-making clinical study."I'm personally really excited about being in the effort to try to prevent people from getting the disease," said Overcash. In just days, Overcash will soon be overseeing a first-of-its-kind trial of a coronavirus vaccine created by the American biotech company Moderna.Starting as early as next week, the first of 350-500 local patients will begin receiving the vaccine. The same one has already been given to patients in phases one and two of the trial. This is the next and possibly final step before FDA approval."What's a little bit different about this particular situation is that the different phases have all been sort of compressed and are all ongoing at the same time," Overcash explained.Overall, 30,000 people around the country are expected to take part in this larger study.Unlike earlier phases, this round is targeting a more vulnerable part of the population. The patients taking part will belong to one of three groups: older than 65, younger but with underlying conditions or those at high risk of catching the virus because of their job.Moderna's vaccine uses what's called messenger RNA to trick the body's cells into producing the antibodies necessary to fight the virus. So far, this particular vaccine has shown promise, but only time will tell"There are multiple candidate vaccines that are going to be rolling out and we're just so hopeful that at least one will be effective enough to be rolled out for use," said Overcash. To learn how to participate in a clinical trial, visit https://coronaviruspreventionnetwork.org/. 1708

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Home sales in San Diego County accelerated in July after declining on an annual basis for more than a year.New data from real-estate tracker CoreLogic shows 3,988 home sales in July, up 10.1 percent from July 2018. That marks the first time since April 2018 that home sales in the county did not decline on an annual basis, when seasonal factors do not impact the data. Meanwhile, the median price for a home sold in the county remained flat over the year at 0,000. In June, the average rate for a 30-year-fixed mortgage fell to 3.8 percent, according to Freddie Mac. That was the first time the rate was below 4 percent since Dec. 2017. It ticked down even lower in July to 3.77 percent. Mark Goldman, a loan officer with C2 Financial, said the lower rates likely helped people increase their buying power by 2 to 3 percent. "That same house is going to cost a little bit less, and help you afford more," he said. "A lot of times when market gives you something like lower rates, the market takes it back in the form of higher prices, and we’re not really seeing that."Goldman said there is less speculation in the market due to concerns that it has leveled off. Still, the median price of 0,000 is pricing people out of the county. For instance, Daniel Obrzut, who grew up in San Diego, bought a three bedroom home in Menifee, in southern Riverside County, for 0,000, where he is raising two daughters. He couldn't find anything similar locally."You're getting houses built in the 1960s, 1970s for 0-0-0,000," he said. "Just couldn't beat it, or it would be three quarters of a million or a million dollar house down here."San Diego County's 10 percent increase in sales activity was the highest in Southern California in July. 1775
