The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision, and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. REXBURG, Idaho — Judge Faren Eddins says there is probable or sufficient cause that Chad Daybell committed the crimes he is accused of. Daybell is currently charged with two felony counts of Destruction, Alteration or Concealment of Evidence, and two felony counts of Conspiracy Destruction, Alteration, or Concealment of Evidence.The decision was made after a 10-minute recess. Daybell was emotionless as Judge Eddins announced his decision.Prosecutors played a recording of a jailhouse phone call between Lori Vallow and Daybell. The recording was made on the day authorities were searching for the bodies of Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow. Soon after, the FBI and other law enforcement testified they found the bodies of the children in shallow graves on Daybell's property.There was no indication that either Lori or Chad was aware of the discovery, and they said nothing on the phone call about what they knew.Daybell's case now heads to District Court, where he will go before Judge Steven Boyce on August 21 for an arraignment. The defense has 60 days to file for a change of venue. No one has been charged in the deaths of the children.Lori is scheduled for a preliminary hearing with Judge Eddins next week on August 10 and 11. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a law that will make the state the first to allow employers, co-workers and teachers to seek gun violence restraining orders against other people.The bill was vetoed twice by former governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and goes beyond a measure that he signed allowing only law enforcement officers and immediate family members to ask judges to temporarily take away peoples' guns when they are deemed a danger to themselves or others.They were among 15 gun-related laws Newsom approved as the state strengthens what the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls the nation's toughest restrictions."California has outperformed the rest of the nation, because of our gun safety laws, in reducing the gun murder rate substantially compared to the national reduction," Newsom said as he signed the measures surrounded by state lawmakers. "No state does it as well or comprehensively as the state of California, and we still have a long way to go."Newsom also signed into law AB 893, which prohibits gun and ammunition sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Todd Gloria in February. The ban is set to go into effect in 2021.Anyone who violates the law could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill.
