SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Coaster service through San Diego County will be unavailable for two weekends this month.To give crews time to complete infrastructure improvements along the rail corridor, North County Transit District announced Coaster service from Oct. 19-20 and 26-27 would be shut down.On Fridays before the closures, southbound Amtrak R2R trains A792 and A796 will make their trips to Santa Fe Depot, but Amtrak train A590 will stop at Oceanside Transit Center.During the service shut down, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink will not provide service to Oceanside Transit Center. Trips on connecting buses will need an Amtrak reservation. Amtrak bus services will also need an Amtrak reservation. Rail 2 Rail passes are not eligible.Bus service connecting Coaster stations will not be available, but some passengers may have BREEZE Route 101 or MTS connections available.While no passenger rail service will operate on the corridor during these times, other vehicles and equipment will be in use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning commuters about an overnight closure on State Route 54 Thursday. According to the agency, crews will close the westbound SR-54 connector to northbound and southbound I-805 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. The connector will be closed so crews can complete maintenance on guardrails.Signs will be posted directing drivers to exit at Highland Avenue, turn left to eastbound SR-54 to northbound or southbound I-805. 472
