More than 100 people die from opioid overdoses every day. Amid the opioid crisis, a newly FDA-approved opioid called Dsuvia could soon be hitting the market, and it’s said to be more powerful than morphine and fentanyl.Dsuvia was designed, in part, to help soldiers on the battlefield. For Navy veteran Rich Shock, a back injury turned out to be far worse than anything he experienced in Iraq and Iran. “At first, started with Vicodin and then it became Norco, and then they doubled the dose of Norco, and then it became Norco with Oxycontin,” describes Shock of his prescribed medication.  As his tolerance and dosage got higher, he started doctor shopping until they cut him off. That's when a friend offered him heroin. “He's like, ‘I'm telling you. It's cheaper. It's easier to find and it lasts longer.’ And he was right. He was absolutely right,” says Shock. The addiction cost him everything, including his job, his family and his home. He said he had one thought.  “How did I get this bad? Like, how did I end up here? After everything. You know I have a wife and a family and a good job,” Shock says. Veterans are twice as likely to suffer from opioid addiction, according to a United States Department of Veterans Affairs health system study. That's one reason behind the outrage over the FDA’s approval of the new, powerful painkiller.Dsuvia is 1,000 times more potent than morphine and 10 times more than fentanyl. It's restricted for use only in battlefields and emergency rooms for patients suffering tremendous pain from traumatic injuries.Even still, the chairman of the committee that reviewed the drug, did not want it approved for fears it will be abused. “I think that this the approval of this drug represents a failure of their most fundamental duties, and I think the veterans are [going to] pay for it with their lives,” says Brenton Huston, with Volunteers of America Veteran Support and Services. Hutson is a Marine who works with veterans.“There are already other drugs out there, less addictive, less potent that are also taken that way,” Hutson says. “So, there's really just no need for it.”Shock fought his way out of addiction, but he fears what could happen with a much more powerful drug. “With the opiate problem we have right now, why would you want to manufacture a drug that stronger? It doesn't make any sense to me,” Shock says. To help prevent abuse, the FDA is putting tight restrictions on Dsuvia. It won't be sold in retail pharmacies or be available for outpatient use, and it cannot be used for more than 72 hours. 2632

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sarah Fuller has become the first woman to score in a Power Five conference football game by kicking an extra point. The goalkeeper for Vanderbilt’s Southeastern Conference women’s soccer champs got her chance on the Commodores' third drive of the game. Fuller, one of three kickers on the depth chart, came out for the extra point that tied the game at 7 late in the first quarter. She put the ball through the uprights and celebrated by pulling her first in before slapping high-fives with teammates with her family celebrating in the stands. An official gave her the ball. Two weeks ago, she became the first woman to appear in a Power 5 football game in a game against Missouri with a kickoff. There have been two previous female Division I college football players, Katie Hnida for New Mexico and April Goss for Kent State.Fuller is coming off the college soccer season, playing in nine games for Vanderbilt. Last month, Fuller helped Vandy’s women’s soccer team to an SEC title by defeating Arkansas 3-1. Fuller had three saves in the match.Fuller is also using the opportunity to raise funds for charity. She will be wearing a sticker on the back of her helmet “Play Like a Girl.” The charity provides STEM education opportunities for young girls. 1286

NATIONAL CITY — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Trash is increasing along San Diego freeways and homelessness appears to one of the driving factors, Caltrans reports.Caltrans officials held a news conference Thursday to raise awareness of the growing problem and encourage people to do the right thing. While Caltrans has no statistics, the agency says its crews are seeing more homeless encampments along local freeways, especially through urban areas, and officials believe that's contributing to the increasing litter. "The encampments in the right of way do generate trash," said Mario Orso, Project Director for Caltrans in District 11, which covers San Diego and Imperial Counties. He stood along an on-ramp to I-805 in National City as it was being cleaned by a contracted litter crew. Orso and other Caltrans officials said along with more homeless encampments producing trash, the problem appears to be on the rise from drivers as well, especially those transporting loads of trash or refuse to landfills without properly tying down their loads. San Diego is not alone, Orso said, as Caltrans officials up and down the state are holding news conferences to increase awareness and encourage people to act responsibly.Orso said trash pickup along freeways puts those who have to clean it up, like Caltrans workers, contractors and corrections inmates, at risk. Caltrans says most of the trash is in metro areas along the 5 and 805.They're urging volunteers to get involved through the Adopt a Highway program; helping clean up a section of highway on their choosing on a periodic basis. 1589
