SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After thousands of Art Institute of California - San Diego students were let down by the institute they trusted, some faculty members are left wondering if they'll receive their final paychecks.Student worker Stefon Harris was waiting for a check on Friday that never came. “Just been checking and checking and checking and it never showed up, it never showed up. I only have in my account," said Harris. The for-profit college abruptly shut down on March 8. The school's operator, the for-profit Argosy University, shut down the campus after court documents alleged it misused millions of dollars in federal funds.“it was shell-shocking, you don’t plan for stuff like that," said Harris. On Monday Harris received a letter from the court-appointed receiver for Dream Center Education Holdings (DCEH), the parent company of the Art Institute. The letter says that given the financial circumstances funds have not been secured and pay is delayed. The letter goes on to say they are doing everything they can to expedite payment for funds owed. 1073

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopper at Westfield UTC mall got a disturbing surprise while going to the bathroom, in the form of a cell phone's camera lens.Around noon on Saturday, amid a busy holiday shopping day, Mike Gonzalez went to the bathroom. His wife and 5-year-old daughter were waiting for him in the nearby food court."The urinals were taken so I went into the stall," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez went inside the stall at the far end."I'm finishing up my business, and I see a cell phone pop out of the stall next to me and pop back like that," said Gonzalez.He says the phone slid against the back wall just enough for the camera lens to be visible."Wow, did that actually happen?" said Gonzalez. Gonzalez' confusion quickly gave way to action."I was angry and felt violated," said Gonzalez. He told another man to get mall security before turning his attention to the stall."When you looked at the stall, he had it blocked with paper towels. You couldn't see in, top to bottom. Kicked the door a little and told him to get out," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez says the man that emerged was in his early 20s, about 5'10", 175 lbs, with curly, light brown hair. Gonzalez told him what he saw and the man denied it all."I was pushing him back, holding him in place so he couldn't leave," said Gonzalez.The shoving moved into the hallway, before the man slipped away and raced off. Gonzalez says what makes his skin crawl the most is the paper towel setup, which may mean the man had been in there awhile, taking photos. "The scariest thing is probably what if there were kids in there. You can put photos and videos online. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was taken to the hospital after the car she was riding in -- which was believed to have been stolen -- struck a building and two parked vehicles in the El Cerrito area on Friday morning.San Diego police said the collision happened at around 5:15 a.m. in the 5800 block of El Cajon Boulevard.Witnesses told ABC 10News they saw a silver Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly reaching 100 MPH, when it lost control and collided with a building and parked cars, littering the area with debris and car parts.Responding emergency crews pulled a female from the wreckage and took her to the hospital. Police said the woman suffered a broken hip and deep laceration on the back of her leg.One witness said a man, believed to be the driver, was able to get out of the wrecked car and ran away from the scene. He was described as Black, in his 20s, wearing a black sweater and black pants.According to police, as officers and emergency crews responded to the crash, a man called 911 to report his car that was left running outside of a business on El Cajon Boulevard was stolen.Police told ABC 10News they believe the car in the crash was the same vehicle stolen a few blocks away. 1226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An emotional sentencing hearing was held downtown Tuesday for a driver behind a fatal Chollas View crash last March.In March, 36-year-old Jacqueline Castillo reportedly had drugs in her system when blew through an intersection in Chollas View, slamming her car into another car, killing 62-year-old Brenda Lee.“I want to put a face to that name. Brenda Doreen Lee was my sister,” said Lee’s brother, Ronnie Lee, as he held her framed photo up for the courtroom and Castillo to see. “You made choices to get loaded. You made choices to drive on a suspended licensed. You made a choice to drive erratically."The crash happened in the early afternoon by an elementary school. Castillo later pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter. “The horrifying images I saw will never be removed from my mind,” said Lee’s son, Myrell Johns. He fought off tears as he described how his family’s life has been destroyed. “I often think about my mother's terrifying thoughts that may have occurred moments before and after the impact of this person's vehicle plowing through my mother's driver side door." Judge Laura Halgren sentenced Castillo to six years in prison. “We're all human but I believe that every mistake doesn't deserve forgiveness,” Johns told the courtroom. 1284

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is taking legal action against a trendy hair product company, claiming it caused her severe hair loss and bald spots. She’s not alone. Women around the country are claiming similar effects. They blame their hair care nightmares on Monat Global, based in Florida.“It’s been so hard,” says San Diego’s Dana Sohovich. She held back tears as she spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair. Her suit accuses Monat of “false and deceptive advertising”.“I literally had almost a baseball size [ball] of hair in my hand,” she tells us, adding, “It's devastating.”PHOTOS: Monat users report hair and scalp damageTemecula’s Ashley Slayden showed us her daughter’s scalp. “You can see the bald spots [on] her head. You can see how thin it is. It was never that thin,” she adds.
