(KGTV) - The family of the man found in a barrel in San Diego Bay, near Chula Vista, is working toward closure two years after he disappeared.Omar Medina’s body was found Oct. 12, 2017, after a diver found a white, 55-gallon drum floating in the bay. I miss not meeting my nieces and nephews, I miss not having cousins for my kids." She spoke publicly for the first time this year at Chula Vista Police's Evening with Heroes fundraiser."Once they came in I felt a weight lifted off my shoulder[s] and that's what they've meant to me, they have definitely been that strength I'm not," she said police showed her family kindness and empathy."[Detectives] who put their photo on their desk and said they're out there. They're going to find who's responsible for killing Omar," Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy said."I slept under this very table here in the office because that's how important it is and how much dedication we need to put in these cases," Sergeant Lavar Brown said in a video played during the fundraiser.Chief Kennedy explained the annual event funds programs the department would otherwise have to do without, "for instance our Canine program, our Senior Volunteer program, our Explorer program," she said their innovative Drone program is also funded through donation dollars.The work they did on Medina's case, will felt by the family long after it's closed."I know I'm just a kid," Omar's nephew Arturo Jr. said at the podium, "but what happened to my uncle hurts me just as much as it did the rest of my family and I'm glad I got to share it with you." CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man suspected of robbing a South Bay credit union was arrested following a crash Wednesday afternoon. According to Chula Vista Police, a man entered the Cal Coast Credit Union on the 300 block of East H Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the man approached the teller window with his hand in his pocket simulating a weapon and demanded cash from the employee. After receiving the cash, the suspect left the credit union, getting into a getaway vehicle. Police were able to locate suspect based on vehicle information provided by a customer at the credit union. Officers spotted the vehicle going eastbound on H Street and tried to pull the suspect over, but he didn’t stop instead leading police on a chase. At some point during the chase, police say the man ran a red light on Otay Lakes Road, slamming into another vehicle. Both the suspect and victim in the crash were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police haven’t yet released the name of the suspect but say he is under arrest for the bank robbery and felony evasion. 1100

(KGTV) - A South Bay city is the latest the approve the sale of legal marijuana in San Diego County.An ordinance that will allow the sale of legal weed in Chula Vista was approved by city leaders Tuesday, after City Council twice delayed a vote on the issue.The ordinance allows for 12 commercial licenses (three in each of the city's four districts) and eight total storefronts (two per district). RELATED: Parents raise concerns over marijuana shop operating near children in Chula VistaPot shops will be required to be at least 150 feet from residential zones, 600 feet from youth centers or parks, and 1000 feet from churches, schools, or daycare centers. Business applicants must have a year of experience operating a legal marijuana business.The ordinance will also allow legal delivery services to operate in the city and for businesses that grow cannabis, though only in industrial areas of the city. Now, Chula Vista resident will be tasked with voting on a local cannabis tax. Tax dollars would pay for new changes, processes, and enforcement of marijuana in the city.If everything is approved, the measure would go into effect Jan. 1, 2019, a year after a voter-approved proposition legalized weed across California.Chula Vista leaders hope the new ordinance will help crack down on illegal pot shops operating within the city. 1421

(KGTV) – A stretch of Chula Vista’s famed Third Avenue will be closed every Sunday in August to allow for expanded outdoor dining and other activities, all while practicing social distancing.The Third Avenue Village Association announced that Third Avenue will be shut down to traffic from E Street through Center Street starting Sunday, Aug. 2.The cross streets of E Street, Davidson Street, and F Street will be open for vehicle traffic. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The South Bay community is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved Olympian High School teacher.Vanessa Sholty’s family said she suffered a stroke on Friday and passed away Sunday. She was only 39-years-old.Sholty’s sister, Rebecca Webb, spoke about her love for teaching dance and her love for children. “She’s been dancing for her whole life. She loves to dance and teach the kids to dance,” Webb said.Sholty taught dance and physical education at Olympian High School in Chula Vista. With distance learning and COVID-19 protocols, Sholty — like the other teachers — made adjustments.“She set up her whole living room like a dance studio,” Webb said.Sholty leaves behind her husband and two young children. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with costs.“We were not prepared for any of this,” Sholty said. “I walk into her house and I see all her school stuff still there because she had she was working that day… it's just some major shock for us all.”Webb said support from the community, including messages from students and fellow staff members, is helping them keep strong.“Her passing has deeply affected us all,” said a post on the Olympian High School Facebook page. “We have grief counselors available for anyone wishing to talk about this tragic event.
