SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men are dead and a woman is in critical condition after a car crashed into a Mission Valley bus stop Thursday.A driver collided with the three pedestrians in the 7500 block of Metropolitan Drive around 11 a.m. The driver remained at the scene for San Diego Police.One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The other male victim was later pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Both victims were identified as men in their 40s.A 49-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police say.Police and a friend of the female victim say the three pedestrians were sleeping behind the bus stop with their belongings at the time of the crash. Jessica Nelson said she knew the 49-year-old woman and brought her some clothing and make-up earlier that day. She said she tried to convince her to go eat with friends, but the woman stayed with her husband, according to Nelson.Nelson said the pink bags strewn about the crash sight belonged to the victim, she called Kelly.Nelson said she met Kelly a year and a half ago at the bus stop where the accident took place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Coast Guard crew members rescued seven people off the coast of La Jolla from a sinking yacht Friday. The vessel began taking on water Friday morning when the call for help came in. Coast Guard, San Diego Lifeguards, and U.S. Navy members all responded."You have to be pretty Johnny-on-the-spot whenever you're hovering over a boat like that," pilot Treston Taylor said. "Especially lowering and hoisting people up and down."A water pump was also lowered to the sinking ship to help buy crews time."For those people on that vessel, they were very excited. Their adrenaline was pumping," Lyman Dickson, the Coast Guard swimmer lowered to the yacht, said. "It's a very intense situation for them."No injuries were reported during the rescue. 795

The new test not only provides a positive or negative reading, but it also provides vital genetic information that can help create a vaccine.From concept to the FDA's emergency use authorization, the San Diego-based team at Illumina worked at warp speed."The idea came 58 days ago," Susan Tousi, Sr. VP. of Production and Development at Illumina said. "It took a village of all of us in San Diego to make that happen."There are already many different types of COVID-19 tests on the market.But the scientists and engineers at Illumina came up with a test that reveals a lot more."Our test not only gives you a yes or no answer for the presence of the virus, but it also gives you the genetic sequence of the virus," Tousi said.On Tuesday, the FDA approved the Emergency use of the world's first COVID-19 test that also shows the biological makeup of the virus.The results can help researchers track and trace the virus and study different mutations over time and in different regions."Knowing this is really critical, not only to the development of effective vaccines but also for us to detect its presence, recurrence, and whether there is a mutated form that we need to be prepared for," Tousi said.The sample is collected via nose or throat swab and sent to the lab.A sequencing machine can run up 43,000 samples a week. From swab to results, it takes only 24 hours."This was the culmination of an incredible amount of work. And I'm confident we're going to make a big difference in the fight against COVID," Tousi said. "The understanding of this virus at the genetic level is going to make all of the difference in the world in fighting this and future disease."The company has already started to ship its tests to large labs across the world. 1904

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong.So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water.
