So, if you’re outside, you’re not relying on the ventilation,” Dr. Nanda said.Lopez argues it’s more difficult to follow sanitation protocol outside.“The trouble with being outside is that the wind blows and so we cut hair and it goes everywhere so it’s hard to control hair. Hair, as we know, isn’t always clean,” Lopez said.He’s concerned about hair blowing into his eyes and the eyes of customers – potentially spreading the virus. However, Nanda says there’s no proof of that yet.“Today, we don’t know of any kind of transmission happening by way of our hair strand or hair follicle,” Nanda said.The other issue Lopez states is the lack of control in a parking lot. Customers agree, but there are other positives to being outside, like the sun.“You’re actually utilizing sunny California to deactivate the virus,” Nanda said.Nanda says working outside is much more possible in a state like California than other states, especially when winter comes. Nonetheless, hair stylists are coming together as many aren’t legally able to work right now.“We don’t make the majority of our living on haircuts," hair colorist Gino Rodney said. "We have to do hair color – we’re all hair colorists – so we make our living off our larger services, and if we’re not able to do that inside, there’s no option for us outside.”Salon Republic Founder and CEO Eric Taylor organized a peaceful protest to inspire the governor to allow services inside again.“The CDC has endorsed our protocols," Taylor said. "They did an exhaustive study about two COVID-positive hair dressers in Missouri who unwittingly saw 139 clients. Not one of the 139 clients got infected.”In the study Eric is referring to, the CDC is outlining the importance of wearing masks since the hair stylists and customers were wearing masks. Hair colorist Gino Rodney argues mask wearing in addition to their sanitation training should be enough to keep clients safe.“We train for 1600 hours just to be licensed in sanitation, disinfection and sterilization,” Rodney said.Nanda says that does make a big difference, but the challenge right now is that COVID-19 numbers are just too high.“That’s great, kudos to them, and that’s the training they can leverage when they’re outside. And when rates go down and are under control and move inside,” Nanda said.There’s no perfect solution to preventing the spread of the virus. Each state is trying to balance the health of human beings, as well as their economic wellbeing. Lopez says if you’re a customer in California, there are ways you can help.“If you’re a customer out there, and your stylist or barber is unable to perform outside, you can go ahead and pay for future services. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County public health officials announced Friday the county's first known death of a person stemming from the use of e-cigarettes, or vaping -- the fourth such death nationwide. Dr. Muntu Davis, the county's health officer, said the patient was an ``older adult who had chronic underlying health conditions,'' but vaping is considered the probable cause of death. He declined to give the patient's exact age, but said the person was over 55. Public health officials said there have been a total of 12 Los Angeles County cases of illnesses stemming from e-cigarettes, with the illness dubbed vaping-associated pulmonary injury, or VAPI. One of those 12 cases was the person who died. Authorities declined to say if the other 11 patients were still hospitalized. Health officials declined to specify exactly what type of vaping product the person used. Davis stressed that ``it is not clear at this time if there is a specific product or device'' leading to the illnesses. He said that in all but one of the 12 county cases, the patients had a ``history of using a cannabis or marijuana-type product,'' notably THC, the active chemical in marijuana. Echoing a warning issued Friday morning by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Barbara Ferrer, director of the county Department of Public Health, urged residents ``to stop vaping now until further information about what is causing lung damage and deaths can be understood.'' ``The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health takes this threat seriously and today we're issuing a warning to all residents about the use of these devices as potentially harmful to proper lung function,'' Ferrer said. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for the family of a black man killed by police in a busy Southern California parking lot said Monday that an autopsy found he was shot 10 times and died from choking on his own blood.The autopsy concluded that 26-year-old Diante Yarber died of asphyxiation and that had he been given medical treatment, he would have had a chance at surviving his wounds, attorney S. Lee Merritt said at a news conference.The autopsy was conducted by a private medical examiner at Merritt's request. An autopsy by San Bernardino County authorities has not been released and it's unclear whether it's been finished.Merritt, who is planning on filing a civil rights lawsuit in the case this week, said the private autopsy found that Yarber had wounds to his chest, back and arms and that he wasn't given medical treatment for "a great deal of time.""The injuries are consistent with defensive wounds ... as he was shielding himself and trying to escape the onslaught of bullets," Merritt said.Merritt did not respond to a message seeking a copy of the autopsy report. Barstow police officers fatally shot Yarber on April 5 in a Walmart parking lot in the Mojave Desert city, about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.At the time police said Yarber reversed into a police car, then accelerated toward officers and hit a second police car, prompting officers to fire.The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting, has said Barstow officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle believed Yarber was wanted for a crime involving a stolen car.Merritt disputes the account of the shooting by police, saying Yarber's car was barely moving.
