ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Encinitas officials announced a "one-of-a-kind" crosswalk has been placed across Coast Highway 101 in downtown.Officials say the artistic crosswalk featuring surfboard shapes and waves spans across the highway at G Street and took two years of coordination between city staff and City Council to put together. The city says the crosswalk will improve walkability and bring more public art to the area.Artist Steffen Vala, whose work has appeared around the globe and been featured by Apple, Marvel, and other big brands, was commissioned for the crosswalk."The iconography of surfboard shapes is a nod to each surfer's 'magic board,' unique to them like their fingerprint. Juxtaposing this individualism is a unifying tidal wave laid out like the ocean's fingerprint that connects all the surfboards. This symbolizes the unifying, collective, 'party wave' we are all riding and our love in protecting the environment while celebrating our differences," the city said in a release. The city says the crosswalk is the longest decorative crosswalk of its kind and first one across a historic highway. 1132

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Día de los Muertos came alive Friday night at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.Dozens of families came to build memorial altars known as “ofrendas.” While many honored ancestors, the Fallbrook Youth Advocacy Coalition along with the North Inland Community Prevention Program came to honor those taken too soon. “We just want to prevent more families from having this event or having an experience of losing a loved one,” said Pastor Anger Medrano from Victory Outreach Church. The groups were raising awareness of teen drug and alcohol use which can have tragic consequences. Veronica Hernandez with Fallbrook Youth Advocacy Coalition said her daughter lost a friend this summer after she was hit by a DUI driver. “She was only 15 years old. So it’s sad,” said Hernandez. 821

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of Newland Sierra, a large housing development north of Escondido, launched their effort to rally voter support Friday at a press conference outside the Registrar of Voters. The project would build 2,135 homes on unincorporated land next to I-15 along Deer Springs Road. The design includes amenitites such as new parks and hiking trails, while touting that it preserves 60% of the land as open space. Newland also points out green innovations, such as solar panels on every home and electric car plug-ins in every garage. Most importantly, supporters say the homes are desperately needed to support families in North County.Opponents say the massive development would change the rural character of the area. They argue that traffic would be unbearable along Deer Springs Road and that evacuating during a wildfire would be dangerously slow. Newland counters that it will expand Deer Springs Road and that it includes a state-of-the-art fire plan. "We'll still have our country feeling, but it's nice to have a safer road," said Corrie Lott, a neighbor who supports the porject.Opposition is led by the neighboring Golden Door resort. "The developer stands to make more than a billion dollars, and the vast majority of homes will require a six figure salary to afford," said a spokesperson in a statement to 10News. 1360

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter." So the hospital asked staff wearing the shirt on-duty, to take it off immediately. The Bylers said they were appalled."It's so upsetting that such a positive, unifying message morphed into and mischaracterized into something that is so hateful," Jim Byler said.A hospital spokesman told ABC 10News that they support Officer Byler. But they acted within their dress code. Part of it reads: 2102
