BOAO, Hainan, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said Friday that he expects China, and similarly for most part of Asia recovering from the economic downturn, to maintain good growth this year."The economic recovery has started. That's a good news for Asia," Goh, also former Prime Minister of Singapore, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua in Boao, a coastal resort in south China's Hainan Province.Goh is here for the annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), a pan-Asian platform of dialogue for key issues affecting Asia and the world, which will officially open Saturday. He was elected a member of the BFA's board of directors Thursday."The worst is behind us," he said, adding that China's recovery has a solid foundation and is on a good growth path."We've paid attention to economic fundamentals. If the economic fundamentals are right, we can let the storm pass by," Goh said. "That's what Singapore and China did."He said some damages in the global financial crisis were not very severe, "so once the storm passes, we grow again."Singapore also saw a very good growth in the first quarter of this year and "the growth exceeded out expectation," he said.Goh emphasized the importance of free trade. As a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Singapore and China took effect this year."The free trade is important for all countries and global economic recovery," he said.Goh said the most important lesson drawn from the international financial crisis is that the government must have "good surveillance system over the financial industry" so as to make sure that banks do not take up too much risky investment, and to prevent investment from turning to bubbles in property and other sectors.He also said efforts should be made to ensure that China develops without causing too many problems in terms of climate change.Singapore has been cooperating with China to develop the Tianjin eco-city in north China for more than one year, which already attracted investors from Japan and Singapore."As China urbanizes, Singapore's experience of building a green city can be used in China for its urban solutions as the country grows," he said, adding the eco-city is a model meant to demonstrate that "economic growth can be consistent with green development."This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of China-Singapore diplomatic ties."We've learned from each other. It's not one-way learning any more. We've learned from China as much as China has learned from Singapore," Goh said.

HONG KONG, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A volunteer from Hong Kong who lost his life on Wednesday when rescuing others in the earthquake- hit Qinghai province of China, has been recommended for a gold medal for bravery at home, local authority said on Friday.Wong Fu-wing, a 46-year-old volunteer, escaped from the earthquake on Wednesday morning but returned to rescue the trapped orphans and teachers in the orphanage where he worked in Yushu county of Qinghai province. He was critically injured by falling debris in a powerful aftershock.Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs Bureau of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, said on Friday that Wong has been recommended for the Medal for Bravery of Hong Kong.The Medal for Bravery (Gold), created in 1997, is the first rank in the Order of the Medal for Bravery, awarded for acts of gallantry of the greatest possible heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.Chief Secretary Hengry Tang Ying-yen said Thursday that Wong's selfless sacrifice deserved the highest respect and expressed condolences to his family.Wong's family members departed from Hong Kong to the disaster zone of Qinghai province on Thursday to collect his remains. BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Beijing on Thursday started to construct a new subway line that will run 47.7 km through the city.Beijing Subway Line No. 14 runs from west to northeast with 36 stops in three districts of Fengtai, Chongwen and Chaoyang, according to a spokesman with the Beijing Metro Transport Construction Management Company.The line is expected to cost 27.2 billion yuan (4 billion U.S. dollars) wand be completed in 2014. And a western section of it will be launched for public use by 2013, he added.Beijing plans to have a subway system that runs more than 300 km by the end of 2010, 420 km by 2012 and 561 km by 2015.
