SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is hoping to stamp out a portion of city litter with newly installed cigarette butts receptacles along San Diego Bay.The Port of San Diego installed 31 of the cigarette butt receptacles in partnership with TerraCycle, which developed the disposal stands.Staff from the Port's General Services Department will be in charge of emptying the receptacles and shipping the used cigarette butts to TerraCycle, who in turn will process them to be used in recycled products.RELATED: San Diego County residents still disposing of more waste than other Californians"Reducing litter is a critical step in protecting San Diego Bay, our precious natural resource. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Mountain View community leaders honored the local work of a long-time resident Saturday with an honorary street.Theresa Mae "Mama T" Saunders was a resident and community member in Mountain View, helping with the development of Mountain View Park and its recreation center.In her honor, the city unveiled an honorary street sign above Ocean View Blvd. for Saunders. "Theresa Mae Saunders was a pillar of the Mountain View community," Councilmember Georgette Gómez said. "This honorary street name is one way we can commemorate her life of service to this community and to the City of San Diego."Saunders raised six children while also taking part in local volunteer work, feeding the homeless, and hosting garage sales to benefit those in need.  801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed in Encanto Wednesday night as 24-year-old Gai Wal.Police were called to the 6100 block of Imperial Avenue just before 6 p.m. on December 23 after receiving reports of shots fired.When they arrived, officers found Wal in the parking lot of a nearby business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso.RELATED: San Diego police: Man shot in Encanto neighborhoodWal was taken to the hospital in critical condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ralphs grocery stores are extending their hours to help seniors and provide greater flexibility for the general public, according to Director of Corporate Affairs John Votava.All stores will open at 6 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. for shoppers 60 years and older. "They're the most vulnerable population out there today, so we want to make sure they have time to come into our stores and shop uninhibited," Votava said.Locations will remain open to the public until at least 10 p.m., some will stay open later.Ralphs is also offering free pharmacy delivery for most locations and free pickup service for most grocery orders. Families took advantage of the pickup service Sunday at the Ralphs in Mission Valley. "I think it's going to make people feel comfortable shopping in a different way. If you can order online or call it in for sure," Tim Earp said through a mask.Votava said they're working on other safety features to protect customers and their employees. Plexiglass will be installed next week at checkout counters, and decals are already on the floor to encourage social distancing at checkout.Votava also said employees are allowed to wear masks and gloves while they work.He does have one request for anyone in the store, "if you see a senior who is shopping throughout the day, please let them cut to the front of the line so they can get in and out of the store safely."Votava said this is the new normal for now, and the store hours will reflect that indefinitely.
