IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Parents in Imperial Beach say the conditions are Reama Park could be dangerous to their children, as playground equipment is starting to show signs of deterioration."It's not normal wear and tear," says Casandra Stoll, who brings her daughter to the park almost every day. "I'd say it's something that needs to be addressed for sure."Stoll says her daughter tore her pants on a crack that developed in one of the slides. She also pointed out parts of the playground where rust and cracked plastic have created jagged edges."If she were to get cut on that, you have to worry about tetanus and any other kind of infection you can get," says Stoll.Other areas of the park have patches in the padded ground that are missing. Even the plastic coverings on park benches and tables have been worn away to expose the rusted metal.Rust on the playground equipment has also created holes in the pipes. Some of them are big enough for a child's finger to get stuck in.Parents says they understand that the playground won't always be in pristine condition. They're willing to accept some rust from the sea-air and normal wear and tear on the equipment. But they say the damage at Reama Park is too much.Sam Townsley brings his daughter Samantha to the park often. He wants her to be able to run free and have fun but says he's keeping an eye out for damage and danger."She's got a sense of autonomy," he says. "As long as there's no overt risk, it's alright."Parents say they hope the city can make repairs quickly."I just hope they can maintain it and keep it up and keep it safe for all the kids to enjoy for years to come," says Stoll. The City of Imperial Beach responded to 10News Tuesday, saying they’re waiting for money to come from the state parks bond, and expect to receive 0,000 for repairs within the next fiscal year.Officials also said they’re aware of the problems, and that Reama Park is in the worst condition of any Imperial Beach park. 1985

Hundreds of flights were canceled and 14 million people were under a blizzard warning Sunday as a storm brought snow, wind and rain to large stretches of the Midwest.Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer issued a state of emergency declaration for the state.Kansas City International Airport was closed to flights arriving on the airfield due to low visibility caused by weather conditions and limited visibility under a quarter-mile, according to an airport tweet. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management's Twitter page said the declaration "authorizes the use of state resources and personnel to assist with response and recovery operations in affected counties.""We strongly recommend that you postpone travel plans, if possible; however, if you must be on the road, make sure your vehicle's emergency kit is stocked, your gas tank is full and your cell phone and charger are with you and someone knows your travel plans," the declaration reads.Multiple roads are closed across the state due to whiteout conditions, according to the KanDrive website. The weather system was forecast to move into the Great Lakes region before hitting the Northeast on Monday, according to CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.Due to the addition of Cook County, Illinois, the number of people under blizzard warnings jumped from 8 million to 14 million. The National Weather Service office in Chicago said the worst will come late Sunday.Nearly 20 million people were under a high-wind advisory. This includes residents of Kansas and some in parts of Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa.Fort Hays State University student Brooks Barber captured the blizzard conditions in Hays, Kansas, on Sunday morning. Streets were dark, and many were without power, he said. The National Weather Service's Topeka office posted a video of near-blizzard conditions.Whiteout conditions brought low visibility to the small town of Chariton, Iowa, which is an hour south of Des Moines. The region could see whiteouts and slick roads throughout Sunday, making travel difficult if not impossible at times, Brink said."It's pretty treacherous travel conditions," she said.Forecasts say snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches are possible across the Midwest. Some areas could receive as much as a foot of snow within the next 24 to 36 hours.By Monday, Brink said, the storm will have moved into the Northeast. Parts of New England could see snow, while cities along the coast are forecast to receive heavy rain. Also, 17 million people are under wind advisories. Sustained winds of between 30 and 45 mph are anticipated, with the possibility of 65 mph gusts. The storm's impacts have been felt already by travelers on the final days of the Thanksgiving holiday rush. Nearly 1,000 US flights had been canceled by late afternoon Sunday, with delays to 3,100 flights, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. Most were at Chicago's O'Hare International and Midway airports. And an approximately 60-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in Kansas has been closed, according to a tweet from the state's Department of Transportation, from WaKeeney to Russell. 3089

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-19 death of a beloved Imperial Beach grandmother."I have no words. So hard," said a tearful Angelica Madrigal, the daughter of Juana Barajas.Barajas, 61, first became sick last week. By the next day, a fever had arrived."Chest congested and shortness of breath," said Madrigal. "She called me and said, 'I can’t breathe well.'"An ambulance rushed Barajas to the hospital. She tested positive for COVID-19 and that night, she was placed on a ventilator.Barajas, who lived with diabetes and a heart condition, suffered four heart attacks in the ICU. On Saturday, just five days after she first became ill, Barajas, a mother of three and grandmother of three, passed away."I couldn’t touch her. I couldn’t say goodbye. Had to see her through a window," said Madrigal.Madrigal says her mother was hard-working, humble, and loved to joke around."Since I was kids, she always had two or three jobs," said Madrigal. "She was my best friend. She was everything to me."Madrigal isn’t sure how her mom contracted the virus, but says her health issues meant she did have many doctor's appointments.Madrigal says her mother otherwise stuck close to home and wore a mask.In the days after her mother's death, she and several other members of her family have come down with symptoms, including a fever and a cough. They spent Friday morning waiting in line to receive a COVID-19 test."This is serious, this is not a joke. People need to take this seriously. If it happened to me, it can happen to you," said Madrigal.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1646
