(AP) — The X Prize Foundation is developing a contest for technology that can detect and extinguish wildfires before they grow too large.X Prize Foundation chairman Peter Diamandis made the announcement Friday at the Near Future Summit in La Jolla, California. Diamandis says it will take about 100 days to develop the rules for the contest. After that, the foundation will try to find a sponsor and launch the competition.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom joined Diamandis on stage for the announcement. California has experienced its deadliest and most destructive wildfires in history in the past two years.Newsom has solicited proposals from academics, private companies and entrepreneurs for innovative ways to address California's wildfire problem. Jeffrey Tambor will not be returning for the next season of "Transparent," Amazon Studios tells CNN.Tambor, who was the series lead, had previously indicated he might not return to the critically acclaimed show, after harassment allegations were made against him.The actor has said the allegations against him were "simply and utterly untrue."In a statement released late Thursday, Tambor said he was "profoundly disappointed in Amazon's handling of these false accusations against me."He also accused Amazon of conducting an investigation that was "was deeply flawed and biased toward the toxic politicized atmosphere that afflicted our set."Tambor, 73, first faced allegations in November, spurring an investigation by Amazon.One of his accusers is his former assistant Van Barnes, who claimed Tambor "made lewd, sexually suggestive and unwelcome remarks to her on a number of occasions," according to Deadline, which first reported the allegations.In a statement posted to social media in November, "Transparent" actress Trace Lysette accused Tambor of making sexual advances and comments toward her.In a statement obtained by CNN on Thursday, "Transparent" creator Jill Soloway praised Lysette and Barnes, "whose courage in speaking out about their experience on 'Transparent' is an example of the leadership this moment in our culture requires.""We are grateful to the many trans people who have supported our vision for 'Transparent' since its inception and remain heartbroken about the pain and mistrust their experience has generated in our community," she said. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A squirrel found in Morrison, Colorado, on July 11 tested positive for the bubonic plague.This is the first known case of the plague in the county this year, according to Jefferson County Public Health. It's not an uncommon sickness to see in rodents year to year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe the plague bacteria circulates in low rates of rodent populations regularly.The department did not release any other information on the animal.Both humans and household animals can become infected with the plague without proper precautions.Humans may become sick with the plague through bites from infected fleas, a cough from an infected animal, or direct contact — such as a bite — with the blood or tissue of an infected animal, according to the health department.Dogs and cats are also susceptible to the plague, though cats are more vulnerable to it. While dogs may pick up and carry plague-infected rodent fleas, cats can contract the plague from flea bites and can die without treatment and antibiotics. If you believe your pet is sick, call your veterinarian. Jefferson County Public Health also recommends talking to your vet about flea prevention if you live near wild animals, including prairie dog colonies.Symptoms of the plague include:· Sudden onset of high fever· Chills· Headache· Nausea· Extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, within two to seven days after exposureIt can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early. The risk of a person getting the plague is extremely low if they take precautions.To keep yourself and your pets safe, the Jefferson County Public Health recommends:· Eliminating all sources of food, shelter and access for wild animals around the home· Not feeding wild animals· Maintaining a trash-free yard to reduce wild animal habitats· Avoiding contact with sick or dead wild animals, particularly rodents· Using precaution when handling sick pets and bringing them to a veterinarian· Consulting with your veterinarian about flea and tick control for your pets· Keeping pets from roaming freely outside the home where they may prey on wild animalsThis story was originally published by Stephanie Butzer at KMGH. 2239

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City FBI agent who rushed to help survivors at the Pentagon on 9/11 died Thursday from brain cancer.Melissa S. Morrow, 48, died after a long battle with the disease. Morrow was certified by The World Trade Center Health Program and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and as a result of her actions on 9/11, her death is classified as a line of duty death.Morrow was working in the FBI’s Washington Field Office at the time of the attack.When the plane hit the Pentagon, Morrow, who was 31 at the time, responded to the crash site and spent the next 10 weeks there and at an evidence warehouse. During those 10 weeks, Morrow was exposed to hazardous contaminants.Les Kerry, Team Leader of the Missouri Law Enforcement Funeral Assistance Team, said that Special Agent Morrow’s death is a chilling reminder that the 9/11 tragedy continues to take lives. “Just an average citizen who didn’t know her, it’s going to bring back some memories of where you were that day of the tragedy and the travesty that took place on 911 and the days and months to follow,” said Kerry.  Morrow served in the Kansas City office from 2010 to 2018.She will be given a hero’s burial with bagpipes playing taps, a 21 gun salute, and a flyover. Morrow is survived by her mother, father and sister.Visitation is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri.
