SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A San Diego man walked up to a horrifying sight:  his wife bloodied and unconscious in Balboa Park.Donna Gookin and her husband Ed were part of a group participating in orienteering last Wednesday in the early evening.  Orienteering is hiking sport that combines a compass, a map and locating markers.  The two were on separate parts of the trail. Not far from the Cabrillo Bridge, Ed found a cluster of emergency personnel around his wife, unconscious and about two feet from a pool of blood."Scared and fearing the worst. I may have lost my wife," said Ed Gookin.RELATED: Elderly veteran attacked in North Park while riding mobility scooterHis wife survived but suffered several fractures in her eye socket and bleeding in her brain.  She remembers regaining consciousness in the hospital the next day."A headache and wondering what happened," said Donna Gookin.Her last memory was choosing to go on a less steep path.  But her husband doesn't believe she fell. RELATED: Police investigating after body found in Balboa Park"I think somebody hit her.  Somebody clubbed her," said Ed.He says his wife, who has thin skin, had no injuries on her body.    "She would have been very bloodied and torn up, because of her skin, if she had ... fallen," said Ed.RELATED: 29-year-old stabbed on bench in Balboa ParkEd also points out her clothes were not sandy and there were no rocks near her that could have caused her injury.  If she was attacked, the couple hopes a witness will come forward."I want other people to be safe and think they would be safe walking on the trails in Balboa Park," said Donna.10News recently profiled an 81-year-old man who says he was struck near his eye by a man with a rock-filled sock in North Park the night after the Balboa Park incident.Police have yet to say if they're looking into a link.  If you have any information on the cases, call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- For the second straight day, San Diego County has recorded over 400 new COVID-19 cases, health officials announced Saturday.The county is reporting 436 new cases Saturday, bringing the total to 12,837.Officials also reported only six communities outbreaks were identified in the past week which falls beneath the county's community outbreak trigger of seven in seven days.The number of recoveries reached 8,954, while the number of deaths increased by two raising the total to 360 for San Diego County.The deaths reported Saturday were of a woman and a man who died June 25 and their ages were in the early 70s and 80s, officials said. The man who died did not have underlying health conditions.Saturday marked the sixth time in seven days that health authorities reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About an hour east of San Diego is a town with few people and a lot of history."In 1880 you'd be getting run over by wagons sitting right here in this little route," Larry Johnson, president of the Mountain Empire Historical Society, says standing on a road in Campo. "I initially came here in 1956."And like many others they come here for a reason.Robert Marks, who owns East County Lumber & Ranch Supply, learned Campo was for sale last week. "We found out the owner was selling all 3 parcels, maybe he won it in a card game!" Marks jokes.While we can't verify that, the current owner of Campo is a Las Vegas investor. He's looking to sell but hasn't named a price.The sale encompasses 28 residential units and seven commercial properties. About 100 to 150 people live in the listing area and about 3,000 are scattered across the whole town. Listing agent Conor Brennan with Marcus & Millichap says interested parties include rehabbers, developers, horse breeders, and movie producers."My reaction is if he sells it I hope we get someone who wants to put something in this community," Marks says."Personally I don't want big housing developments, I'm not for that," Johnson adds.But it wasn't too long ago the town was looking for another buyer in 1999. Since then, things have largely remained the same."We like it country, we like to have a few new people join us and keep population increasing a little," Johnson says.But residents of Campo want potential buyers to know this is: "It's awesome.
