SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). CHENGDU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday reopened a key road leading to a mudslide-hit county in southwest China's Sichuan Province, which local officials called an important step in speeding up relief and rescue efforts.Traffic resumed on National Highway 213, linking the provincial capital Chengdu to Wenchuan County, on Sunday afternoon after emergency crews worked for nine days to clear the mudslide sludge and debris on the highway.On August 13, mudslides struck parts of Wenchuan, cutting a section of the highway after torrential downpours pelted the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba.At least 15 people have been killed and 31 remain missing, according to the latest available government figures.Wenchuan was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and neighboring provinces in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.Heavy precipitation is particularly dangerous in terrains once shaken by earthquakes, which then become more vulnerable to geological disasters, said Hao Liping, the head of the provincial meteorological bureau.
