BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee met Tuesday in a meeting on anti-corruption, demanding greater efforts in addressing problems the masses complained about most and fighting corruption among grassroots officials.The meeting was presided over by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese President Hu Jintao. The participants heard a report of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC over anti-corruption work for 2010 and discussed related plans for 2011.The meeting has called for further efforts to address problems concerning construction projects, and vehicles bought and used at public expenses.Those attending the meeting said regulations and disciplines that govern the selection of officials must be strictly followed and related unsound practices should be corrected.Noting that fighting corruption was still a tough task, the meeting urged all related authorities to step up anti-corruption efforts towards building a clean government.Further, more work must be done to improve officials' style of work and cement ties between the CPC and the masses, the meeting participants said.Also, the participants called for efforts towards building an improved anti-corruption system that consisted of corruption prevention and punishment.Such a move, they added, would facilitate the implementation of China's development blueprint for the 12th Five-Year-Plan period (2011-2015) and China's social and economic development.China will mark the 90th anniversary of CPC's founding next year. The meeting called on all party members to work for new achievements in fighting corruption in a bid to greet the coming CPC's anniversary.

Hu also met Prime Minister Jose Socrates and parliament speaker Jaime Gama. They reached important consensus on boosting the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.China and Portugal established the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2005. Bilateral relations have developed steadily in recent years.The leaders recalled developments of bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations 31 years ago, and outlined the blueprint for future bilateral ties and pragmatic cooperation. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- More people enduring poor living conditions have been covered by China's social security system, according to the country's Ministry of Civil Affairs.Various figures disclosed during a national working conference held Monday by the Ministry in Beijing showed that as of November, about 75 million people had been provided with minimum living allowances, an increase of 5.4 percent from the same period of last year.In terms of medical services, 8.58 billion yuan (about 1.3 billion U.S. dollar) were spent in to aid nearly 60 million people in need in the first nine months of the year, up 28 percent than the same period last year.In addition, over one million vagrants and beggars with no means of support in cities had been receiving help as of December 2010.Also, the Ministry has set up aid centers for homeless juveniles in 40 counties and cities with 30 million yuan of the proceeds from the welfare lottery.

BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- "Building roads before building wealth," a widely known slogan in China, was cited by Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad.Lengsavad was referring to a planned high speed railway for his country. As an inland country, Laos wants to counter its disadvantages of being land-locked by improving its transportation systems, Lengsavad said at the ongoing seventh World Congress on High Speed Rail in Beijing.In April, Laos reached an agreement with China to establish a joint venture that will construct a railway linking China's southwestern Yunnan province and the Lao capital of Vientiane. The project will be launched in 2011, with an estimated construction time of four years, Lengsavad said.Thailand, another country in Southeast Asia, is also partnering with China to improve its rail network.In October, Thailand approved a negotiation framework for a project for Thailand-China cooperation on high-speed rail. BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China said it will make greater efforts to start six-party emergency consultations because tensions on the Korean Peninsula have not eased."The six-party talks are a very important way to advance the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in northeast Asia. We, the concerned parties, should make full use of the talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six-party talks involve China, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)."While the talks have yet to be resumed, we think it is the proper time for emergency consultations between the heads of the delegations of the six parties," said the foreign minister.Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK and the ROK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23. China proposed emergency consultations among the chief negotiators in December.Amid the international community's repeated calls for restraint and calm, the United States held separate large-scale naval drills with the ROK and Japan in waters near the peninsula."We will continue to make patient efforts to persuade the parties to engage in consultations," Yang said.He said the tensions on the peninsular will ease "only if all the parties show their sincerity and make joint efforts.""Stability on the Korean Peninsula is good for all.
