During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island in California to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. The "van life movement" has made a mark on social media. The hashtag #VanLife has been used more than 4 million times. Even though the movement is growing in popularity, sleeping in your vehicle on city streets in San Diego isn’t allowed. Those who do it are willing to risk a ticket or have to move around from location to location. Currently, there is a lawsuit filed against the city of San Diego pushing for a lift on the ban against people living in their vehicles and parking on city streets for long hours. The city declined KGTV's request for comment because the matter is ongoing.Breanne Acio runs SD Camper Vans and converts vans for people looking for life on wheels. She says she’s seen an increase in customers recently. “A lot of people are downsizing," Acio said, "and they are putting their lives first and doing things they thought they could only do when they’re 65 and retired." 2481

Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said the poll still shows the race isn't over, despite Jacobs' big lead. Kousser noted Jacobs still has not secured at least 50 percent of the vote, according to the poll."We're going to see an all-out press and more money spent by each of these candidates because they see that this race is far from over," Kousser said. "Sara Jacobs hasn't closed the deal, Georgette Gomez still sees a light at the end of the electoral tunnel from this poll."The candidates combined spent nearly million campaigning through June 30. Jacobs, granddaughter of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, reported .5 million in receipts, while Gomez reported .17 million. "It's always nice to have polls reflect what we're feeling on the ground, which is that what voters are looking for in this district is someone who has the kind of experience I have working in the federal government and who will be a new generation of leaders," Jacobs said in an interview. In a statement, a spokesperson for Gomez's campaign expressed confidence. “It’s still early and not a single vote has been cast," the statement said. "Georgette Gómez’s message of leadership in response to the coronavirus crisis and standing up to Trump as President of the San Diego City Council is starting to reach voters. Our campaign is ramping up its efforts to reach voters in every corner of the district."Kousser said Jacobs likely has more name recognition, given her ads and her unsuccessful attempt in 2018 to run for Congress in Coastal North County's 49th District. In the case of Gomez, he said local politics such as City Council does not garner as much attention as it should.The poll, of 534 likely voters, showed 63 percent of the undecided voters are Republicans, in the heavily blue district. Kousser said they simply may decide not to vote in that race.The poll also shows Joe Biden beating President Trump 61 to 30 in the 53rd, which comprises central San Diego and heads south into Chula Vista. SAN DEIGO (KGTV) — At least two sailors who helped fight the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have tested positive for COVID-19.The two sailors tested positive after exhibiting symptoms, according to U.S. Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Nicole Schwegman. It wasn't immediately clear how the two sailors may have contracted the virus.The exact condition of the two sailors was not provided.Contact tracing identified 27 people regarded as "close contacts" and they are now in quarantine.RELATED: Navy Admiral meets, thanks sailors who put out USS Bonhomme Richard fireThursday, Navy officials said all known fires had been extinguished aboard the vessel.
