CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista man is recovering after a painful encounter with a rattlesnake sent him to a hospital for several days.It happened in a quiet Eastlake neighborhood near a canyon. A week ago, along White Pine Ct., just before. 9 p.m., Lino Ayon was visiting a neighbor, inside a garage, when the neighbor pressed the remote. The door went up."As I stepped out, I felt like a pinch in my ankle area. Then I heard a rattle and by the time I said, 'Oh, that's a snake,' it bit me again," said Ayon.His neighbor tracked it down and killed it: a 3-and-a-half-foot rattlesnake. Meanwhile, Ayon quickly started feel the effects of the bites."My body started getting numb, my face and my chin," said Ayon.His left ankle -- where he had been bitten twice -- started to swell with pain. His speech was slurred."In my mind I knew what I wanted to say, but it wasn't coming out right," said Ayon.He was brought to the ER, eventually receiving two doses of antivenin. He was released from the hospital two days later."Very scary, never in a million years did I think I was going to be bitten by a snake," said Ayon.While rattlesnake bites for humans are fairly rare, experts say be on the lookout this time of year. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - UTC Aerospace Systems plans to wind down manufacturing at its Chula Vista aircraft plant beginning early next year, eliminating around 300 jobs, it was reported Friday.The company -- a division of Farmington, Connecticut-based conglomerate United Technologies -- said the decision stems from ending production of certain commercial aircraft models, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The Chula Vista plant builds aerodynamic engine pods and mounts for customers such as Boeing and Airbus.UTC Aerospace plans to keep an after-market spare parts distribution, engineering test labs and administrative jobs in Chula Vista, according to the Union-Tribune."We remain committed to being in Chula Vista," Stacey MacNeil, vice president of communications for UTC Aerospace told the newspaper. "There will still be 1,500 jobs there. We are not shutting down the entire location."The closure of manufacturing, however, will end production of aircraft components at the plant, which has been building planes and supplying aircraft sub-systems since Fred Rohr founded Rohr Aircraft Co. in 1940, according to the Union-Tribune."We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, and will not begin the wind-down until 2019," the company said in a statement. "We expect the entire process to take place over a two-year period."The layoffs include about 265 sheet metal workers who are members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, according to the Union-Tribune. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. (KGTV) - If a person suffers cardiac arrest inside a hospital, their chances of surviving are lower than you may think.According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the survival rate for adults is just 23%. The nonprofit attributes this low number to poor-quality CPR."So we need to do better in order to improve that number, our patients deserve better, our staff deserves better," said Sarah Saunders-Harbaugh, a clinical lead at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.Saunders-Harbaugh is leading the hospital's effort to adopt the new AHA training method: RQI 2020, which stands for Resuscitation Quality Improvement. The simulation-based training provides verbal feedback in real-time while staff members do compressions and ventilations. Previously staff was only required to get re-certified every two years. With RQI 2020 staff will train every three months, but only for about 15 minutes each time."So 'we're constantly building muscle memory, and we have the opportunity to get better while we're using this equipment and then we have the opportunity to save more lives in the hospital," said Saunders-Harbaugh.A Texas hospital using this training method increased its survival rate by 21%, doubling the previous rate.Sharp Chula Vista is the first hospital in the county to implement RQI 2020, and the AHA hopes to have it in every hospital by 2025. 1389
