CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement is investigating after a man died while in the agency’s custody. According to ICE, the 37-year-old Cameroon man, identified as Nebane Abienwi, died at Sharp’s Chula Vista Medical Center Tuesday. Abienwi was taken to the hospital in the middle of the night on September 26 to undergo treatment for a brain hemorrhage. According to the agency, medical staff at the center provided treatment after Abienwi remained unresponsive to questions and appeared to be paralyzed on his left side. He remained in the hospital until his death. According to records, Abienwi applied for entry into the U.S. without proper entry documents on September 5. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista jiu-jitsu instructor pleaded not guilty Wednesday on four counts of lewd acts against a child under the age of 14.Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn told 10News the alleged incident involving Gabriel Gonzalez happened August 18. It did not take place at the Chula Vista Jiu-Jitsu facility on Third Ave. where Gonzalez worked, Lynn said.The judge issued a protective order for Gonzalez to stay away from two females, whose names 10News is withholding due to the sensitive nature of the charges.Gonzalez’ bail was also increased to 0,000. 606

(KGTV) - Chula Vista police are now investigating multiple fires that broke out in over the span of a few days in the early hours of the morning.Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department, said they started early in the morning Sept. 17 and most have been fences and vegetation that burned. That Thursday morning, crews responded to multiple fires that started in the span of about half an hour, starting on Lake Crest Dr. & Wueste Rd, moving to 1120 Eastlake Parkway, then Telegraph Canyon Rd and Buena Vista Way and finally E. J St and Paseo Ladera.Just about two days later, crews then responded to a fire at the playground at Veteran’s Park. Karina Lodin lives across the street. She said she woke up to see the flames, then she called 911 and her husband took a video of the blaze.“For a second there, with everything that’s going on in California with all the wildfires, and you see this big fire outside your house, you start panicking like is my house going to catch up on fire,” said Lodin.She was disheartened to see the play structure flattened because it was a spot her son loved to play.Just one day after that, another fire nearby on Martin Place, also in the early hours of the morning.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain D’Orsi.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said.She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi. 1894

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District said Tuesday that it decided to end the employment agreement of Dr. Karen Janney, the district’s superintendent.Janney had been under pressure to step down following a multi-million dollar budget shortfall that prompted an investigation into possible misappropriation of funds.In June of 2020, the board voted 4-1 to place Janney on paid administrative leave.Tuesday afternoon, a district spokesperson wrote to ABC10 News that a new vote happened in a board meeting on Monday night. Video posted by the district only refers to the termination of an employee. Tuesday, the district spokesperson sent ABC10 News the following statement: "The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees provided Dr. Janney a 90-day notice to end her employment agreement, pursuant to Article 17b of that agreement. On behalf of the entire Sweetwater community, we want to thank Dr. Janney for her many years of service and dedication to the district, its board, and our students."Janney took over as superintendent of the district in 2015. Three years later, the district reported a million budget deficit.Also in June, a report from California’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team reported that there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed before crashing into the side of a building in Chula Vista Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the initial call came in around noon as a drunk driver. Witnesses reported seeing a man in a tan SUV slumped over and followed him.Police say the SUV then slammed into a gate and crashed into the side of a self-storage building traveling roughly 10 to 15 miles per hour on Industrial Boulevard near L Street.When police arrived, they discovered that the man was dead inside the vehicle. Police confirmed later in the day Wednesday that the man was shot. Shortly before the crash, witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots. Investigators are currently working to get surveillance video from the self-storage facility. Police are also asking that anyone with information on a possible suspect contact them. 932
