When the intruder refused to stop, the driver tried to physically block him from getting into the passenger area, Uelen said.Seeing the two men fighting, a grandmother of one of the students hurried aboard to try to help the driver. As the struggle between the three escalated, the assailant pulled a knife, Uelen said.At that point, a second bystander entered the bus and intervened.After a scuffle, he was able to pry the weapon away from Barker and pull him off the bus.Meanwhile, an older student ushered the other children to the back of the vehicle, called out for help to some parents who were still nearby and helped the young students get out of the bus through a back door and rear windows.Arriving deputies arrested Barker, a Campo resident, without further incident. (CNS) -- A man who struck and seriously injured a bicyclist in Ramona last fall pleaded guilty Monday to felony charges of reckless driving resulting in serious injury and vandalism.Chase Edward Richard, 35, admitted hitting Michelle Scott from behind on state Route 67 near Dye Road with his Ford Edge last Oct. 2. Scott was struck around 6:15 a.m., and was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with serious injuries.She remained at the hospital for about two months before being transferred to a Poway nursing care facility, where she remains under full-time care, recovering from the brain injury she suffered in the crash, according to the Ramona Sentinel.Richard was arrested less than a week later. The California Highway Patrol said a tip from the public led investigators to Richard's damaged SUV in the garage of his Ramona residence.Richard agreed to a three-year, eight-month term that will include two years in local custody and 20 months of mandatory supervision.Per the terms of his plea agreement, Richard will also perform 200 hours of community service, a component of his sentence that Deputy District Attorney Valerie Ryan said was important to Scott's family.The victim volunteered with multiple local programs, including the local Community Emergency Response Team -- or CERT -- which trains and assists community members in response to emergency situations like natural disasters.Ryan said Scott's husband, Don, hopes that Richard can "do what he can to give back to the community because Mrs. Scott can no longer do that."The prosecutor said Don Scott is "hoping through this time on mandatory supervision that Mr. Richard can change and alter his behavior" and "contribute to the community" once he is released from custody."There's a lot of graciousness and generosity of heart in the Scott family, and they are hoping and looking for Mr. Richard to do better" Ryan said.Sentencing is slated for July 28. 1966

(KGTV) - A day after a massive fire broke out in an East County recycling plant, smoke was seen billowing from a building just a freeway exit away Thursday.San Diego firefighters responded to the site at about 12:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen pouring from a building in the 100 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon. The site is that of the city's former police station, that has since sat abandoned.It's not clear if there were active flames inside the building, but footage from Sky10 showed thick smoke coming from the building.San Diego Police officers were also seen nearby with three individuals sitting on the ground. Police have not confirmed if anyone was in custody or being questioned.The site was approved for redevelopment last year, with plans to build a hotel and retail stores on the site.Wednesday, a metal recycling facility burst into flames, sending black smoke into the air. EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- Paul and Jenny Fisch can't even step inside their home without wearing a breathing mask. Their dream home was destroyed after they thought the house was sold."I mean, there was just no words...the feces and the urine spread all over our white cabinets, all over our hardwood floor, it was even on the ceiling —10-foot ceilings," Jenny Fisch said.The Fischs put their home on the market for 0,000, and the first offer they received was for full asking price. They were elated, but there was a catch: The buyers wanted to rent the home with the promise they would close in three months."We were told these people were 100 percent qualified, there was no question about it," Jenny Fisch said.Everything seemed to be fine, and they had no reason to doubt the offer. The realtor drafted up a contract with information about the loan and a closing date of January 31, 2018. The deadline came and went without the buyers closing on their home even though they were already living in it."What do we do? The only thing we have left to do is start an eviction," Paul Fisch said.The couple even attempted to work out a new deal with the would-be buyers so they could continue renting and eventually purchase the home. The buyers stopped paying rent and they had no choice but to evict them. It wasn't a quick process. Paul and Jenny Fisch weren't prepared for what they were about to find when they showed up to their home with a sheriff's deputy to finally kick the renters out."When she walked out her face was like, 'it's bad," said Paul Fisch.Floors were covered in urine, there was feces everywhere and the smell was overwhelming. The house was absolutely filthy and completely trashed."And I lost it, I just lost it. I was like, 'I don't understand why we have to go through this.' I mean we hired people and now my beautiful dream home is covered in feces and I don't know how we're going to fix it," said Jenny Fisch.Records show the buyer was pre-approved for a loan, but only if he completed a program and improved his credit score. The lender said that never happened. This information was not made available to the Fischs, and they only found out after the deal fell through.The couple said their agent and the buyer's agent assured them everything was good when they agreed to let the buyers rent. A spokesperson for RE/MAX, the buyer's realtor, said realtors don't qualify buyers and it is up to the lender."It's their fault and nobody wants to help us," said Jenny Fisch.The Fischs tried to filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, but they were told it was a civil matter. They also tried to contact Child Protective Services and animal control because a child, seven dogs and three cats lived in the home with the renters.The Fischs' insurance also won't cover the damage. A spokesperson for Auto-Owners Insurance said they had no comment on the situation.Now the couple is paying a mortgage on a home they can't live in and trying to figure out how to come up with the funds to pay for repairs. The would-be buyers are nowhere to be found, and Scripps station KMGH in Denver has not been able to make contact with them."It was insane to me how somebody could live in such a nice home and in a matter of months, destroy everything," said Paul Fisch. 3382
