Scientists, doctors and the public are eagerly waiting to hear how effective a COVID-19 vaccine will be and how soon it could be available to everyone. But when the vaccine is ready, some will be racing to be first in line, while others will be cautiously waiting to see how it plays out."Only about half of people get a flu vaccination polls are showing. In terms of the coronavirus, that’s saying that a third to maybe as much as half of the population will not want to get a vaccine," said Arthur Evans, the CEO of the American Psychological Association.Evans is concerned about whether people will be willing to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it comes out. How people are educated about the upcoming vaccine will be crucial."Right now, I think there are a lot of people who want to take a vaccine and to get a vaccine, but if people feel that this has been rushed, that they don’t feel all of the normal safety measures have been taken, it's going to be much harder for people to take that step," explained Evans.Dr. Bali Pulendran, a pathology, microbiology and immunology professor at Stanford University, says just because a COVID-19 vaccine is being expedited doesn't mean it's any less safe."It's a very established, lengthy process. It’s expedited now because of certain technologies such as the mRNA technology that really helps you accelerate this process," said Dr. Pulendran. He says the creation of a vaccine is rigorously tested, first with mice, then primates, and finally, humans. Tens of thousands of people are currently choosing to participate in COVID-19 vaccine trials."And so, this is a development and paradigm that has served vaccinology really well. It's really served it well in terms of enabling the licensure of some 20 or more vaccines," said Dr. Pulendran.Dr. Pulendran says every year, the flu vaccine varies in efficacy. For a good year, it could be 90 percent protective, while the next year, the flu shot may only be 10 percent effective. The COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be 60 percent effective."I think for me, personally, if I saw a vaccine coming out in the next year or so that had a 60 to 70 percent efficacy, that to me would be very encouraging," said Dr. Pulendran. The public, though, may still need some convincing."One of the hardest things for the general public to embrace is the idea of probability. We like to know definitively if something works or not,” said Evans. “The reality is that a vaccine is a probabilistic issue. It's highly likely that you won’t contract, whatever the condition is, but it’s not 100 percent."Evans says the key will be in how the vaccine is marketed to the American public.Dr. Pulendran hopes any positive data and outcomes of the COVID-19 vaccine trial will encourage as many people as possible to get the vaccine when it comes out. 2823

Sec. of State Mike Pompeo implied Tuesday that he supports President Donald Trump's legal challenges to the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. When asked if there will be a smooth transition of power in the State Department, Pompeo said he believed the "there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration."While Pompeo offered a chuckle following the statement, at no point did he acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden's projected victory."We're ready. The world is watching what's taking place. We're going to count all the votes," Pompeo said. "When the process is complete, the electors will be selected — there's a process. The Constitution lays it out pretty clearly."While he didn't directly state that he believed the unsubstantiated reports of widespread voter fraud, Pompeo echoed other Trump administration officials who have said that all legal votes must be counted."I'm very confident that we will — and we must — count every legal vote. We must make sure that any vote that wasn't lawful not be counted," Pompeo said. "We've got to get that right, and when we get that right, we get it right."Later on Tuesday, President-elect Joe Biden was asked if he had a response to Pompeo's comments."There is no evidence to any of the assertions made by the President or Sec. of State Pompeo," Biden said while giving a pointed chuckle at the mention of Pompeo.Pompeo's refusal to acknowledge Biden as President-elect comes as several foreign dignitaries have already issued congratulations to Biden. 1535

SEATTLE (AP) — Scientists say an orca who raised worldwide concern when she carried her dead calf for 17 days and more than 1,000 miles almost two years ago is pregnant. The Seattle Times reports Southall Environmental Associates scientist John Durban and marine mammal research director for the nonprofit SR3 Holly Fearnbach recently finished recording drone images of the endangered southern residents and discovered pregnancies amid the J, K, and L pods. According to SR3, whale pregnancies typically last 17-18 months.Pregnancies are not unusual but Tahlequah's pregnancy carries special meaning for a region that grieved the death of her calf along with her. The southern residents are struggling to survive, and most pregnancies are not successful.SR3 says the unsuccessful pregnancies are due to lack of food and nutrition and there are only 73 whales in population. 881

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of San Marcos is taking action after 10News highlighted concerns by residents in a senior community who said their homes were at greater risk of a wildfire because of untrimmed brush near a creekbed. The city has cleared brush every year along Discovery Road near Lakeview Mobile Estates, but with an upcoming road-widening project scheduled for the area, the city initially told residents it would delay brush trimming along the San Marcos Creek until crews begin grading work, according to HOA Vice President Jim Woodard. That work is scheduled to begin in December."To save a few dollars and put us in this kind of risk, we're completely vulnerable," he said. "It's just a ticking timebomb."The brush, which is now taller than six feet in some spots, is just a few feet from the mobile home community's entrance."This is the only way in and out of the park, so if there's a fire on this side of the park, we're trapped," Woodard said.Resident Lee Katola said many of her neighbors are disabled and would have difficulty evacuating during a fire."I'm fearful. I'm fearful," she said.Woodard added, "It's perfect fuel for a fire. One spark coming over from that grass hits that fence, and we're toast."San Marcos Communications Manager Robin Rockey said the city was aware of the concerns."The City of San Marcos Fire Department spoke with residents at Lakeview Mobile Estates and is working to address their concerns and clear brush along Discovery Street," said Rockey. "The fire department is working on setting a time for the next clearing."Late Thursday, Rockey said the city would clear the brush by Wednesday of next week. The 214-acre San Marcos Creek Project will include two new bridges, a park, and will widen Discovery Road to four lanes. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022 1842

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Voters in one San Francisco Bay Area county will decide whether to remove a judge from office for sentencing a former Stanford University swimmer to a short jail sentence for sexual assault in a case that sparked national outrage months before the Me Too movement took off.The effort to recall Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky is being closely watched for its national political implications. If it's successful, Persky would be the first California judge recalled from office in 86 years after he sentenced then-sophomore Brock Turner to six months in jail in June 2016 for sexually assaulting a young woman."This vote is a harbinger," said Barbara O'Connor, a professor emeritus of political science at California State University, Sacramento. "It's one of the first tests of whether the Me Too movement will turn out to vote."RELATED COVERAGE: 880
