SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local wildlife researcher is being remembered after he died Thursday at a remote canyon in San Pasqual Valley.David Bittner, 75, of Julian, died what he loved doing. He was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras in the Brady Canyon area, when he fell at least 50 feet. The county's Medical Examiner says Bittner called to a friend there with him, but was pronounced dead at the scene shortly later after crews pulled him to safety.Bittner co-founded the Wildlife Research Institute with his wife and devoted his life to the cause, according to Molly Jager-Begent."He would tag eagles all over the world and follow their paths to figure out what was really happening in the world of wildlife," Begent said.RELATED: Man dies after falling 50 feet off Escondido cliffBegent said she and her husband donated a portion of their ranch off Highland Valley Road in Ramona to the Wildlife Research Institute. Lined inside the ranch are wildlife photos captured by Bittner, another passion of his."He was just really dedicated. He had a passion," Begent says. For decades, Bittner led a free "hawk watch" on Saturdays during the first two months of the year, where biologists would teach the community about birds and their relationship to raptors.Begent said the wildlife expert helped educate thousands on the importance of wildlife preservation, even purchasing 3,000 acres and gifting it to the county as a wildlife preserve, according to Begent."His life was dedicated fully to his love of wildlife and wild places, helping educate thousands on the balance of preservation and healthy appreciation of wildlife while protecting their habitat first and foremost," said Katie Quint, who worked closely with Bittner.Thursday, Bittner was replacing batteries near the location of a threatened Golden Eagle's nest, according to Quint. "Dave has been advocating for San Diego County’s Golden Eagle population with local agencies by ensuring the long-term documentation of their nesting ecology over the past 31 years," said Quint.Saturday, a special tribute is planned for Bittner from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Begent Ranch in Ramona, the area where he connected so many to his love of wildlife. 2210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new monolith was supposed to be unveiled at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on Wednesday, but it was found destroyed hours before the introduction ceremony.Several weeks ago, a mysterious monolith appeared at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace, attracting crowds and raising questions like where it came from and who put it there.However, several days later, the monolith was removed by a group of teenagers.The theft of the monolith was disappointing for many, including Nutmeg Bakery & Café co-owner Drew Hoffus. He told ABC 10News that his business not only had a first-class view of the monolith, but it helped bring in customers.“This year has been a challenge for everyone … The landmarks helped us out a lot. Thursday crews worked to move a large movie prop onto the deck of the famed vessel: A replica of the TBD Devastator that was used in the movie “Midway." “It’s the only Devastator on display in the world,” says Walt Loftus, Air Wing Director at the USS Midway Museum. “All the rest of them are at the bottom of the ocean.”RELATED: Top Gun 2 plane driven through Coronado streetsThe plane is a replica of the carriers that sailors used at war. The giant plane was a prop used in the upcoming film, starring Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, and Nick Jonas. It's designed with “big square tubing with foam made into the shape of the devastator,” says Loftus. “But it's the actual size that the Devastator was.”"Midway" follows the story of U.S. Navy sailors and aviators who persevered through the Battle of Midway in 1942. It was only six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man claimed four off-duty San Diego Police officers beat up him outside of a local bar.“I have a laceration on the back of my head, three staples, a lot of bruises a lot of cuts on the face,” said Jonathan Felix.Standing in his attorney’s office, Jonathan Felix described a November night he’ll never forget."All I remember is waking up in my own pool of blood a few times,” Felix told 10News.Felix said that after working a shift at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter, he stopped by a Mission Valley bar for a drink.He said he lives nearby and uses its parking lot because parking in the area is scarce.According to Felix, before he headed home for the night, he saw four men standing near his car. He said he didn’t know them, but wanted to make sure the valuables he had in his vehicle were safe.He said after a few interactions with the guys, they didn't leave and appeared to be intoxicated.He claimed the men never identified themselves as San Diego Police officers."I felt threatened for my life,” Felix said.Felix's attorney said at some point, Jonathan Felix pulled a gun and held it at his side. The officers surrounded him, and the situation escalated.The San Diego Police department saw it differently, calling the off-duty officers victims of assault with a deadly weapon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823
